  • spitfire worn early?

    my rear is about toast...
the front still looks good though.

i do alot of commuting with a little mountain riding on the weekends.

unfortuantly i can't find my paperwork for the spitfires so i can't say for sure how many miles are on them???

i put them on right after the suchess rally maybe 5-8k miles ago?
i never peel out. i have chirped just a tad a couple of times while engine braking though.

i read these tires should last a long time. unfortuanitly i did alot of freeway riding when i first got them before i found a short cut through the twisties to work. plus the p-cola trip pretty much did them in.

i weigh about 200 with gear and never ride anyone. i check the pressure alot to make sure it's good. how many miles have you guys been getting on the spitfire rears?

    thanks

I've only got 4,600 miles on mine, but just went out to check them out and I think they've got another 4,500 in them easily. I do like pushing it off the line and thru the corners, but only weigh 170 and almost never ride two up. one thing else is that I normally run the air pressure on the lower side of the specs. 26 at the rear and 30 up front, that seems to keep them round (cross section) longer.

I just went out and measured the tread on my rear and it shows .161" of tread at the center of the tire. New they had 9/32nds (.28125"), and I currently have 2,313 miles on them. I'm 195 lbs., the bike is nekid, and I ride fairly aggressively with considerable throttle twisting along with the accompanying hard braking. At the current rate of wear (assuming it remains constant) I should be due for a new rear at 5300 miles.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Front tires will usually go about twice the rear. I get about 15K on my Dunlop Elete II rear tires. I know have an E3 on the rear of the MNS, so I'll have to see how long it will go. I only have about 3K miles on it, so it may take a while, as I use the Standard more often than the special.

Assuming the performance is about the same, you need to figure the cost/mile when comparing tires. I have used a lot of Dunlop Elite II’s. I get about 10,000 miles on a rear (not as good as Ray). I used to get them for around $115 delivered. I pay $15 to get a tire mounting so I include that to come up with a total cost of $130. That divided by 10,000 miles comes up to 1.3 cents ($0.013) per mile. I just ordered a rear Bridgestone Spitfire to try out. It cost me $71 delivered and will cost me $15 to mount ($86 total). So, to do as well as the Dunlop cost wise, it has to get 6,615 miles. I’m hoping for better,,, and for good performance.

I was thinking about posting the same thread on my rear Spitfire. I have about 3,000 miles on it and guessing it will last to 6,000 or so. Prior to the Spitfires I have a old worn dried out set of Metzelers that came on the bike (the front was even mounted backwards). So far I love the Spitfires for grip but I'm a little dissapointed on tire life. I know I won't get as much life as an average person due to a higher speed limit and ultra-chip sealed highways in this state, but I was at least hoping for 8,000 miles.

With that being said, I would buy another set of Spitfires because I would rather have traction then super long life.

                  Spitfire S11

I found the Spitfire rear wore quickly but I may have got 10,000 kms on it before I changed it .Quite worn in the middle . I expected the Avon Roadrunner to wear as fast but am pleasantly surprised as I have 5000 + kms on it and it is hardly worn at all .

I don't think I have ever gotten more than 3k out of a rear tire. I thought it was just the cheap tires I used to run, but my Metzy lasertech's aren't doing too much better. On the other hand, I mainly ride locally and ALWAYS ride hard (and have BIG chicken-strips).

                      Hi yamahansolo,
From your above post you are just using them up.
If you want good tire life move to some state with flat straight boring roads or come up here where we only get to ride 1/2 the year:
Take a run up 129 for me before the cords are showing
