  • Final Drive Leaking ?

    Hi All

I took the Bike out for a bit of a blast last night - may have slightly broken the speed limit a few times on my little ride too

However, I just noticed that there's a bit of oil on the final drive casing - I've included photo's here too - any idea what could be leaking around this area ? (I had a look and couldn't spot the exact leak) - there's no oil dripped onto the floor overnight, but I've found the thing about leaks is they get worse when you least expect it - that, and the oil probably only leaks out when the final drive heats up ?

I had a leaking diff on the trike, but that's got 2 wheels at the back and not so likely to leak oil onto the wheel !

    Cheers
    Chris

Clean it off with a good degreaser and then monitor over the next few days to see where it starts from, but it looks like it's coming from the flange seal to me. There's an O ring behind the shim for the pinion shaft assy, which means pulling the FD, removing the 4 nuts and withdrawing the pinion to get at it.

Is anything wet underneath in front of that? You should be able to smell the oil and see if it's motor oil getting slung back or gear oil.. pretty noticeable difference.

It's definitely gear oil - it's got that 'stinky' quality to it

I'm about to give it a quick degrease, then a 5 mile ride to see what happens.
