Just by your first two symptoms I'd have to go with that regulator either bad or on its way out. You seem to have good voltage but if it's heating up like to where it's hot to the touch that's a bad thing.
just my 2 centsIf you don't own a fire extinguisher, do me a personal favor and go purchase one... immediately.

Check the big white connector behind the fuse block. That's a common place for corrosion and shorts, causing heat, melting, and Tach failure. Mine melted so bad I had to crush the plastic to get the wires out.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Start there.I had one of those wires burn to an exhaust pipe once.
And it is common to have problems at that connector

Check the STATIC voltage at all connectors. I DID have a wire get "hot" INSIDE the harness, and melt to a ground wire! that one took about three months of running "as is" before I was able to find it. I would also check and clean ALL ground connections. The MAIN harness ground is at the.....Regulator!
Keep us informed, and we can try to halp from far away, so we DON'T hear the words I know you are using!Ray Matteis
