So other than MikesXS, does anyone have another source for coils? I'm pretty positive mine are bad and it seems MikesXS is out of the black coils. They have the green ones but I can't see myself spending that much on them just yet.

You can look at some of the newer automotive coils. Hit a junkyard and look under the hood for an engine like the Subaru that uses a waste spark coil. You WILL need to bring a VOM with you to check the resistance. If it's about 1.3, you will need a ballast resistor. ~3 Ohms, should be good. Any more than ~4 Ohms, and you should NOT use them.
Don't know if this helps, but it IS another way to try and find a "hot" coil cheap.Ray Matteis

Partsnmore.com has the same coils as MikesXS
I needed another one of the same coils you're talking about from MikesXS (I busted one, don't ask). Anyway, he was out at that time too. I searched for the part number and found out that Partnmore.com sells the same ones, part number 17-6803. So I picked one up from there and it was exactly the same, worked perfect.

Well I cannot speak for Mikes green coils or most other aftermarket coils however, I have a pair of 3 ohm Dynatek Performance DCI-1 coils with 8.8mm Accel stainless steel wires. They will not make more power for you but will definately unlock any potential power you may have. You can feel the difference both in unlocked performance and the fact they will knock you on the ground if you happen to get in the way of the spark path.Mike Giroir

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

replacement of the wires
Hi,
Maybe can you send me a mail address so I can send you pictures of the pieces ans also an other way to replace the "wires" of the coils. I've descript it in a word document. If you're interested...... It works very good. Generally, the coil(bobine?) is in a good state but the wires become ""marshmallow" )))))))))) )))))))))). I've made it on my XS
Greetings from Belgium
Alex
PS: sorry for my bad Us speaking

Z1 Enterprises sells a set of 3 Ohm Dyna Coils for our applications. Unfortunately they're nearly as expensive as the green monsters, but only put out 30k volts. The green ones put out 45kv at 12.5 volts input, and 75kv at 14 volts input.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Hey SuperXS,
You speak better English/American than some natural Americans do!! Thanks for the offer of the replacement of wires in old coils writeup, but we already have one in the tech tips, complete with pictures and everything!
Well, I'm glad that the green ones are performing well for you all. I still have the regular 35Kv black MikesXS/PartsnMore ones that I put on when I did the tech tip, and they have worked flawlessly for several years now. I've read where some folks oopsed and tried to SOLDER their wires to the terminals.. I believe they(MikesXS) state to NOT solder the wires to them, but use slip on connectors. Sorry to hear that they are becoming out of stock for both Mikes and PNM!
Probably any aftermarket high output(double OEM of 15Kv or more) will provide the enhanced performance, just depends on how much you want to spend for it. I know mine starts up much quicker and easier, and just has plenty of power. I didn't really notice any better mileage though! YMMV!?
