  • Wiring Questions Front Blinker and fuse box

I just got this 78' xs1100 with 45k polished and am working on restoration of this monster, I have searched and am having a hard time getting this figured out. Most of it has to do with reading the wiring diagram.

Question 1: The wiring diagram shows the front left turn signal having brown (BR), blue (L), and a ground, the right front turn signal shows dark green (DG), blue (L) and a ground. is there any way to hook up a two wire aftermarket blinker? Are blinkers grounded by the nut and light housing?

2: I've also located a what looks to be a red and blue connection in the lighting housing as well should this be there or is it possible its pink and blue and my horn connections? Sorry PO had a mess going on.

3: Should the fuse holders be wired in order shown in diagrams? Can you still get the 12v10a slo-blo's anymore? If not any suggestions on replacements?

4: Does anyone know the size bolt needed for the oil drain plug? PO used a NGK sparkplug with sealer )

Thanks for all of the help I am looking forward to hearing this beast run I will post before and after video links in about a week when she's running.

    1. The blu is for the running lights (2 filament bulb setup). It gets it's ground thru the housing (ground wire attached to stalk in headlight bucket). It's ok to run a single filament blinker, just leave off the blu, but you will lose you're running light.

    2. The blu and red wires with the female bullet type connectors in the headlight bucket are for use with a fairing, no fairing, they are not used. Pink and the tan wire is for the horn.

    3. Never use slo-blo fuses. It's best to replace the old glass type fuse box with the newer blade type. It'll save you a lot of grief down the road.

    4. Don't know.

If it's a BP6ES sparkplug, then its an 18mm thread, if that helps...
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

          clearification

"(ground wire attached to stalk in headlight bucket)"
Sorry I'm not sure I am understanding what you mean, There is 1 ground wire coming off of a rivet in the light housing.
So with the two wires I have on the new blinkers should I just connect these to the Brown and blue on left side then run the ground from the rivet to where the light secures to the headlight housing with a nut? I can't thank you all enough for the help!

I know your lamps have 2 wires, but how many filaments in the bulb?

Ok, so one filament. For the left side, hook one wire of your signal to the brown, and the other to ground. Right side, one wire to green, other to ground. Find the black wire in the headlight bucket and use that as your ground. Blue wire isn't used for a single filament setup, just for a 2 filament. Not sure what a diamond filament is, but if you hook the two wires from your signal up straight to the battery, 1 to pos, 1 to neg, and it lights up, then hook everything up the way that was described above.

I love it! I can only imagine looking at the underside of the bike for the first time, seeing a spark plug sticking out of the bottom of the oil pan, wondering, "where's the plug wire for that one?"

                        Hi Altermad and welcome,
the old seal it with a sparkplug trick eh? What an ingenious bodging bastard.
Whatever the oil plug thread is supposed to be, it's M14 x 1.25 now.
Did the dreaded PO use a complete spark plug, ceramic & all?
You could always smash the ceramic out and braze in a steel plug to seal the sparkplug body to make it look tidier.
Makes oil-changes easier too, removing the oil drain plug with a plug-wrench.

                          Hi Altermad,
there went your stock flasher unit. The stocker will only blink if it's loaded with 27Watt bulbs front & back. With a lesser load the signals will come on and stay on. You should be able to get 27Watt signal bulbs from a Yamaha store. Alternatively you can run lesser wattage bulbs with a ~$10 2-pin electronic automotive flasher. It will plug into the stock flasher's 3-pin plug two ways; one works, the other doesn't.You will also lose the self-canceling feature.

I 2nd that! Best $9 I've spent on the bike. Took no fancy tools, or crazy knowledge to do, and only took about an hour of time to install.
