I didn't mean to hijack this thread
LOL Have you looked at this thread ? Seriously though, it all adds to the information pool. You started out with a question about the coils, and lo and behold, that's where the fix was. I think that information, and the process you had to go through to locate it is completely appropriate right here, and just might help somebody else with the same problem. Besides, I've hijacked so many I figure it's just karma . Glad you found it!

      Resurrecting this thread for feedback!!

      Hey Folks,

Just got back from the XSEast 2011 rally, but had an interesting END, see below!

I made the MikesXS.net BLACK Coil upgrade tip in 2007. Since then several others acquired them, but then reported their failures some time later....1 year or less after they installed them, one stated around 11k miles, which can be 1 years worth of riding for a daily rider. I don't ride mine that much, so I only put about 1500 to 2k miles a year on it, and so at 4 years later that's 8k or so miles. (Just re-read this thread, and saw the 8K miles report from others).

Here's the luck part...I rode my bike the ~210 miles from home to the rally, then the ~400+ miles of rally riding, then the ~210 miles back HOME, and as I pulled up to the exit ramp stoplight for the city road ~1 mile to my house, I was stopped at the light just idling...when the tone and feel of my idle suddenly changed! I tried revving it, but it didn't rev very well, sounded/felt like it was running on 3 or less cylinders. I was able to nurse it on home, then while it was still running, I got out my inductive timing light, and when clipped on the 2-3 pair plug wires...the light was flickering quite quickly, but when I tested the 1-4 pair, the light was only intermittently flickering....it is a very sensitive pickup, and might even have been picking up a little from the GOOD pair, but there was definitely a difference in the signal, which correlates to most likely the 1-4 coil had stopped firing...burned out???

SO.....hence my "Luck o' the Irish" comment. Looks like I'll be editting that tech tip a bit and that I will be either getting the GREEN ones from MikesXS, or some DYNA's from another source!?!? And I was worried about the Mini-ALT Mod? BTW, it worked flawlessly, no problems with the pulley or the crankshaft/rotor assembly!

FEEDBACK request...it's been 2 years since several of you installed the GREEN MONSTERS....can you report how many MILES you've put on them, and whether they still seem to be working as good as NEW!?

TC - Here's the only problem I've had with the Greenie Meanie's - they draw so much power that they can cut in and out a bit when you hit real high revs - about 8500 rpm's on Betsy. I'm thinking of putting one of Geezer's regulator/recitifiers on and see if the additional juice solves the problem. I love 'em though, and I'd hate to get rid of them as the power below 8500 is great. The Dyna's basically have the same specs as the Mikes black coils - 30k volt output, and from what I've heard they won't cut out at high rpms. I'll let you know if the Geezer unit solves the problem on the Greenies. I am somewhat torn though, as it kind of acts as a rev limiter - which isn't a bad thing for me .

Since I have installed the Dyna coils I have had no problems. So far I have put about 1000 miles on my Dynas, which lasted alot longer than the mikes xs black ones. I found the dynas to be cheaper than the mikes xs green ones. $130 for the Dyna coils vs $152 for the mikes xs green ones. One of the main reasons I went with the Dyna coils is I dont trust the mikes xs coils. I had 3 out of 4 coils fail. 2 were on my bike, 2 were on my Brother-in-laws bike.

I just checked my maintenance log and my odometer - 2207 miles on the Mikes Greenies so far. The black ones I had failed at 7k miles, so I've got a ways to go.

TC , I have about 7000 to 8000 km on my green coils and they are working fine. I like em They are a bit of a hassle to install but well worth the money and time. I believe mikes xs is out of stock and a 3 to 4 month waiting period for restocking.

                  Hey Ozz,

I,too, found sources for NEW Dyna's for close to that price, and the DYNA's are warranteed for 1 year...Mikes has NO warranty on any of their coils!

Their green units look exactly like the Dynas...thinking that Dyna may be doing subcontract work with the XS-Performance folks to make them???

I'll probably be going with the Dynas as well. Gotta check my Paypal balance!

I sent MikesXS a lengthy email expressing my/our dissatisfaction with the black ones, trying to give them feedback to research them further...since they don't provide any warranty on any of them, the 650 folks are probably just chalking it up when theirs goes bad, but a lot of people are wasting $ buying them, installing, just to have them fail with essentially only 1 years worth of daily riding....poor quality IMHO...told them that it puts a bad feeling in regards to their other units, and that they should consider NOT carrying the cheap black ones, or to seek more feedback about them to help them realize that they are "CRAP" coils! We'll see what the reply is!

TC, did you let them in on the fact your running them in an XS11? They will surely blame that for the issue.

DGXSER - I used the original primary side wires. I don't remember what the wire gauge is.

T.C. - I to had sent them a email about the coils. I never recived a response. I did not even tell them they were for a XS11. Maybe they will reply to you now since they been bought out?

It's been a while since it was updated, but 650WIKI.ORG has a parts evaluation list. It could use more input.
