you lost me on your photo post, with the exwife mounting thing.
It had something to do with saying one thing, and doing another. Gotta leave it at that before I have a flashback .
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Thanks for the excellent review. After I recover from all the money I spent on the brakes, I'm getting a set of these for my 79 Standard next.

I have more than enough metal around here that I should be able to make up some brackets to mount the coils without modifying the mounting holes.

I would have preferred not to drill them, but after trying various and sundry angle brackets, I just couldn't find the space. Hopefully you'll have better luck with it.

Don't forget to check your plugs. High output coils do burn HOTTER and you "may" need to look at your jetting.

I took a look at the plugs this morning, and they look good. Also gassed up this morning, and fuel mileage is definitely up - 35mpg with mixed city and hwy driving. The best I ever got before the green monsters was 32.5, but that was with the stock FD, so I don't know whether to attribute the gain to the coils or the FD. Can't wait to see what it does with all hwy miles. Whatever did it, I'm a happy camper .

i'm in the market for new coils, anyone know if the green ones are any harder to install than the $35 ones on a 79sf?

Kev - yeah, they're a little more difficult 'cause they're bigger around. I checked my maintenance log and the $34 variety that just crapped out on me didn't quite have 9k miles on them. I guess you do get what you pay for . The black ones were pretty good coils till they failed, but I wouldn't let a few installation headaches make the decision. You're only going to install them once, and then you're going to live with them for a long time afterward. If you do it like I did and drill some holes, installation is easy, but as previously mentioned it will void the warranty. If you're confident in your ability to drill holes the installation is very easy. Screw it up and you'll be using bailing wire to secure them . Or you can wait a while and see if anyone else can unravel the bracket mystery. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

KevXS, if you put them on a 79 Special, you'll probably run into a problem with that plastic steering neck cover. IIRC, the bracket for that cover attaches to the front coil mount through bolt.

I didn't think about the specials, but you're probably right. I looked through the tech tips, and TC evidently had to use some brackets to get the black ones mounted in a special. Let me revise my previous statement to 'their relatively easy to install in a standard.' Here's a link to TC's tech tip.

I got a real up-close look at a special today, and I don't think the bracket for the steering neck cover should be a problem. It's far enough forward and wide enough that it shouldn't be in the way - at least on the 81SH I was looking at. I still can't see a way to get them installed without some drill-work though. Maybe if they were dropped down a little lower, but that might cause issues with valve cover removal. Other than that little metal bracket, everything else looked pretty much like a standard.

                        Mounting option

In the tech tips there's a thread on Dyna coil installation. The Dynas look to be about the same size as the green Mikes coils, so maybe this bracket configuration will work.

Made some L brackets.I was going to drill but I didn't like the way the mounting bolts would go threw the laminated core.
