  • Closeup Engine Photos

Hey, I am in the process of reassembling my bike and have been thinking that it would be a real help if there were a bunch of closeup pictures of an assembled bike. It might help us non-mechanical noobs to be able to see if we are putting things back together correctly.

Might be helpful if you could be a little more specific as to what parts you are wanting to see. Especially at close up, there is ALOT to see, and would be way to much to detail it piece by piece for the sites bandwith if nothing else.

Too many parts for a closeup

Yeah, Maybe you are right about the number of closeups it would take.

I had a time figuring out the rear brake setup this evening as well as the rats nest of wires that sits behind the headlamp. The last thing couldn't figure was where the large wire off of the starter motor goes to.

If the '84 FJ1100 uses the same engine, which it looks to me like it does, this link may help. It's a parts/assembly fiche from Snake River Yamaha where I work. That's the only 11 bike currently available online close to our vintage. Just click any item you wish to see blown up view for and you can then shrink/enlarge the fiche view.

So long and thanks for all the Fiche!

Actually, the XS1100 fiche are also available on line here:

Seemed like Sam was looking for a higher level of detail than the fiche would provide.

I didn't take enough pictures of the bike as I was dismantling it. There is a thick wire coming off of the starter motor... Where does it go? Could someone take four or five shots of their engine and post them here? I am mostly looking for where the various wires go and or how they route. I actually have the "where" figured out on most of the wires, it is the routing that is confusing me.

Thick cable from the starter motor goes to the lower large post on the solenoid. The upper large post takes the shorter large cable up to the battery positive.

Here's an old tried and true trick for putting things back together the way they came apart. It has been used by many novice wrenchers and will work for most jobs. You will need some cord or string and some Zip lock bags.
You put all the parts on a length of cord as you remove them from the bike including facing the right way. Bolts and items without any holes in them (which are rare) go into the bags and get strung onto the cord in order as well as the parts.
When you reassemble the bike of job your working on you take the parts off the cord in reverse order.
I am sure everone has at one time or another seen a string of parts hanging on a garage or barn wall in the past.

Very good idea. A few months late, but a very good idea. I bagged everything in ziploc bags and labeled it with the page and number from the manual. It worked well. So far I only have three bolts I have not identified and I am pretty sure where they go. It is the connections that I did not document, and how they route on the bike. Thanks for the suggestion though. I will do that next time.
