dbeardslee said it best in one of his postings...

Pri, On, and Res. When the handle covers the markings, that's the position it's in. On is the normal running position, flows from the top of the tower (inside the tank) and should shut off the gas flow when no vacuum is present. Pri (prime) flows gas all the time regardless of vacuum from the bottom of the tower, and reserve flows from the bottom of the tower when vacuum is present.
Prime basically free flows fuel to the carbs...

Prime is used mostly for filling the carbs after running out of gas, or draining them for whatever reason.

Saves having to crank too long.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

                Hi chevy,
your profile don't say, do you have a Special or a Standard?
both styles of bike have on, reserve & prime fuel tap settings but they work in different ways.
The Standard has vacuum operated fuel taps that open automatically when the engine starts and close automatically when the engine stops
except when the taps are switched to prime to let fuel flow all the time.
The Special is different. It's taps are not vacuum operated and have two outlets.
One goes straight to the carbs and flows when the taps are switched to prime.
The other goes to a central vacuum operated "octopus valve" that turns the fuel on and off when the taps are switched to on or reserve.
Thing is, many POs have deep sixed the octopus as being an unnecessary and failure-prone complication which means you have to remember to turn the gas off just like grandpa had to.

Actually based on him having an off setting tells me it's a special (at least the taps are). Sounds an awful lot like the description of an octy in there also.

Yep Std petcocks do not have an OFF setting as the PETCOCK is vacuum operated and off when the bike is off. The Specials that had/have the Octy valve have an off position so you can remove the tank without draining all the gas out. The vacuum shutoff for the special is at the Octy. None the less, in both cases the PRI=PRIME which means it flows fuel without the vacuum source, and it flows form the lower inlet, which means when it runs dry you have NO RESERVE left and just became a member an elite group that gets to push a heavy SOB of a bike to the next station.

I was lucky when the happened to me, I was just getting ready to call AAA for my 3 gallons when the freeway helpers stopped by (most urban areas on CA have this during rush hour) and gave me a gallon of gas. It was actually the point that I discovered that the modified petcocks on my original tank had been modified such that after going to reserve I had less than 15 miles of fuel left. Now I have unmodified standard taps and don't know how far I can go on reserve (and I'm not sure I want to know) but I may stick my 1 gallon gas can in the trunk and run it to it dies so I know.

The reserve on a Standard is one gallon+-. I can usually go 20 to 25 miles easily, and I'm only getting about 32MPG at the moment.(carb problems, from day 1) The 80 Mid Night Special will go at least that far, as I'm getting close to 40 MPG with it.

You CAN, but if you shut the fuel off, that is TWO places it has to leak before going into the carbs.... How safe to you need to be?? It's all about what YOU feel you need to do. I park both my Standard AND the Special without touching the taps. The will be parked for up to a week at a time before riding, and still no problems. I DO keep up on the maintenance, though.
