Trying to tune one of these beasts without an intake restriction of some kind either pods or the stock air box will result in rapid baldness. You will pull your hair out. Sounds like setting the idle mixture screws at 1.5 and a vacuum sync should get you back to a good starting point. 125 mains with pods on an 81 should be big enough. You can't adjust the timing on an 81 and every one I've checked that hasn't had the not adjustable bolts replaced has been spot on. You could throw a timing light on it just for grins but I'm betting the timing is OK. Your way lean if the pipes are glowing. Put the pods on and go back after it. You will get there

To much oil = way high idle

I just solved my problem, maybe this can help others.

My xs was idling WAY too high, around 4k. As it turned out, i had about a quart to much oil in it. drained the excess oil and the idle corrected itself.

      Hope this helps someone.

        Runs GREAT!!!

        Thanks to all!
My bike was idling at 200/300 RPM as smooth as silk. The tach barely moved!
After syncing I adjusted it to about 800 RPM and it responds perfectly. See pics of the HIGHLY accurate home made syncronizer I slightly improved on (the original idea is on this site). at my photobucket album. I have pics of the bike and my plating bench there also. Will post more after the final touches this next week.

          E3 plugs

BTW the plugs were running a slight bit cool so I got some E3 plugs ($$high$$) and will test them this weekent and report findings.
