I was wondering how many of you use the stock glass fuses? I've had some fuss with them to the point of carrying extra's on me at all times. It could be that the life of them was just up and needed to be replaced. Has anyone gone through and converted to modern fuses? If so, what sort of cost and labor is associated? Thanks.

Do a search on "fuse box", and you WILL find a few threads. TC has some nice replacement boxes for about $10 that take the "new" blade style fuses. The other way is do what a PO did on one of my bikes, and put 4 single fuse holders in place of the box. Works just as well, just does not look as neat.Ray Matteis

I have done the fuse box upgrade (thanks to TC) and couldn't be happier. Just getting rid of those old fuses and connections cleared out some of the electrical gremlins. I even have a couple of unused slots in there where I keep spare fuses.
I went from this:

Yep. Definitely the easiest upgrade I will ever do on this bike. $20 total cost (including new fuses) and 1 hour of actual work to finish the job. I HIGHLY suggest taking this route!1980 XS850SG - Sold

I didnt; know about the mod on here with the newer style fuses, and I needed to get it up and running on a weekend.....so I found a glass style fuse holder at the local auto parts store...and works great for me.

Glass box replacement
The last time I looked (it's been a while), Parts n More offered a reproduction fuse box. The cost is reasonable, but far more expensive than TC's fuse box replacement. I did the reproduction box on two XS650's because I found it easier to do on that bike. The glass holders lasted over 20 years on that vibrator! I have yet to touch the XS1100 (if it ain't broke, don't fix it), but I did source a new box from TC.Marty (in Mississippi)

I run this type of modified gang box on both of my XS's. Everything is soldered, no plug in connectors. Main 30A fuse is in the in line holder. Left row are functioning fuses, right row are spares.
