  • fifth gear issues

occasionally, my 1100f won't go above 3500-4000 rpm's in fifth gear also doesn't have the response or torque it's supposed to at that speed. really sluggish. when this has happened i would shift to fourth and then back to fifth. After i do that it seems ok. only recently it's not been corrected with that little trick. i had it wot and nothing above four grand. any ideas? i think that it might be a carb issue with the #3 carb sticking. after i pulled out to a gas station and then to a friendly harley guys garage i tinkered with a couple of little things that had nothing to do with the carb and then a backfire from the left side and poof back to normal. any help with this would be very much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Sounds like you're not getting enough fuel. Try running on prime and see if it improves. What do the plugs look like?

Sometimes.. every now and then... my bike will start to lose 2 cylinders and act like it's running out of gas.. (Sputtering and popping) when the tank is still quite full. It has always been the left side. I turn my petcock to reserve, it clears up, then I switch it back to run and don't have any more problems. It's done this maybe 3 times to me over the course of about a year.

Don't know if it's the same thing.. but worth a try.

Mine acted up similarly and I found one of the main jets had come loose and fell in the bowl.

Scratched my head quite some time on that.

hasn't done it since monday and i've ridden about three hundred miles since last post. I understand about switching it to prime. right now that's the only way she'll run. i'm gonna take apart and clean the carbs up probably next week some time and i'll make sure to check my petcock and hose cleanliness while doin it. thanks.
