    I really had the first opportunity to ride my latest purchase today. Who says you can't go back?

    I have often wondered if there is a taller gear setup for the xs-11. Such as swapping a Virago or some other drive line to reduce rpm's in top gear. If so, how much reduction in rpm will you notice?

    If anyone has any research on the issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

    I have read in one of the forums (transmission) about what seems to be a swap but I am not clear on which unit was used.

    If anyone can assist me on this issue, I would appreciate it greatly.

    Hey Jackol...

    Yes there is a way!!!! There's been a cool discovery a few years back by one of my best friends... Maximan and another fellow, XSChop. On the main page, scroll down to the section headed "Modifications", Transmission, Final drive transplant. Good reading about a 750 or 850 conversion swap. Usually, expect around a 750 rpm drop... and big fuel mpg increases. Well worth it for an XS11. Welcome, and enjoy!!!

      Don't bet the farm on the MPG increase.

      Mine got worse. However, I can cruise at 80 in 4th and the mileage gets right back up there. I am not saying you shouldn't do it. I like it quite well, and don't plan on going back.

        I didn't get any better mileage either.. but it wasn't worse. WHat I do notice is that I don't keep trying to shift into another gear while cruising down the road like I used to with the stock drive.

        Find a final drive on Ebay, then bring it with you to the Meeting of the Minds in Hurst Texas in June. Look for it in the rally section under south central.

          Interesting, Ivan...That's another difference to add. I was thinking about doing it to my XJ, and Cody would help me. But the more I read what others were saying about where there's tached at 70mph, I realized mine already did! But yet mine is a stock 82 XJ1100 maxim final drive. Plus, mine already seemed to be plenty high geared enough to suit me. So, I opted out. Trbig has done his Maxim, and likes it. Said he noticed a difference. That's wild your gas mileage was affected differently. See ya.

            Curious now... what do you guys average? I clocked mine at a consistent 30.

              On my stock XJ with full vetter set up I average about 37. I have gotten in the low 40's if I keep the speed around 65 though.

                With the 850 FD, I get about 28 normally. On the way back from Eureka Springs, I kept it in 4th and got about 34-36, which is what I used to get with the stock FD

                    The 1100 final drive isn't any more heavy duty than the 750/850 except that there is a longer spline engagement on the driveshaft. I think with the wheelies and me eating up transmission gears would attest that this doesn't seem to affect the toughness of the unit.

                      I have a Standard with Vetter fairing and bags. B/4 the conversion I got in the low 30's. After I get 40- 44. This was hiway driving at 60 - 65 mph.

                        Rpm

                        Thanks for all the replies. Now, I am curious about what rpm you guys are turning at 70 mph. At 70, I am turning 4500 and would like to reduce it.

                          Don't recall the RPM's off the top of my head, but I'm getting a pretty consistent 30 on around town driving (all low speed, 50 and below) and when I get out on the road it goes up to around 37 or so.

                              Yep, same here, 3700 @ 70MPH on a Standard with 17" rear wheel & 750FD. Slightly higher rpm on my Special with 16" rear wheel & 750FD @ 70MPH.
