  • Another new guy, and a new owner.

Hi guys, what a story I have for you. Just to let you know Im a young guy, about to turn 24 this June. I have been itching to get my own bike and to be set free on two wheels. Ive had plenty of dirtbikes growing up and riding back home(Watkins Glen, NY). About a month ago I called up my Dad and asked him how he felt about me getting out his old '78 XS11 std and getting it in riding condition, he thought that was a good idea. He called me up about two weeks later and said, "hey theres two XS11's for sale in western NY (I live in Rochester NY) how you feel about goin for a drive?" Of course, I said hell yea. First bike we stop at, '79 XS11 with 16,XXX miles, all origional condition, turn key ready to ride. We took it for a little putt around and my Dad bought it on spot. Another hour+ drive south and were looking at a second one. This one is a '79 SX11F, full dresser with 31,7XX miles. It was well taken care of, came with the service and owners manual. All the maintenance was documented and everything. Had $650 of work put into it in '07, front breaks all redone, carb kit, front fork oil/seal...ect. It had only been driven 400 miles since '07! So we negotiate with the guy and struck a deal. He writes the the bill of sale and ask who's name is going to be on it and my Dad asked if I was ok with owning it. Just like second nature I said, hell yeah. Here are a few pictures of my bike. Ive had it for almost 2 weeks and have ridden ~250 miles. After I ran out the gas that came with, it started to run better, I think the PO had put cheap gas in it or maybe it was old...

Anyways, after I put some good gas in it I added some carb cleaner and ran that through. It still hesitates and breaks up all to shzit if I open it up too much too fast. Correct me if Im wrong but Ive been reading all the carb stuff I can on here and, would the first step be to adjust float level before changing jet pilot jet size? It seems to be rich all through the RPM range, starts kinda hard warm or cold w/no choke, pulles good from idle to about 3500 RPM then not much power beyound that. It breaks up more the faster I open the throttle at any RPM.... It has a Jardine 4-1 header/baffel and I havent taken the carbs apart yet but I have a good feeling the jets are stock... OK! well now that I have take 15min's of your life that you will never get back, take a look at the pics I have. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

    P.S.
The last picture of the tank I was trying to get a good one of the coating on it. I believe it's a vinal coating of some sort, the side cover have the same texture... Weird, anyone know if this was a factory option?? There are a few scratches in it down where your "jewls" are but it's hardly niticable because it didnt scratch all the way through... Its definately a good from far/far from good kinda thing. Borderline ugly up close haha, thinkin about removing it at some point. Whats your opinion?

Not too shabby!! Welcome to the forum! Nice to see the younger crowd leaning toward these older bikes. Lots of guts and glory in these things. Be sure to ask any questions you might have. You're better off asking first just to be sure you don't regret doing something later. Lots of knowledge here, so there's almost always someone who's done exactly whatever you're trying to accomplish. Although, since both of your bikes are already running, looks like you won't have your hands too full right away. Try taking the carbs apart and cleaning them extremely well. Get all the tiny holes cleaned out, and you probably won't have to mess with changing jet sizes. If you need to, you can always order new jets of the same size.

Nice looking bike! If ti were me, I'd first let the cleaner sit overnight and then run it through the carbs good. If that does not clear things up, I'd pull the carbs and clean them really good.

Just a 4-1 exhaust typically does not require re-jetting. I think you are suffering more from bad gas and gunked up jets in your carbs. JMHO

        Welcome

Thats a cool story.I hope you and your dad have a lot of fun together fixing your bikes up.It looks like you did ok.
Yea it sounds like you probably need carbs cleaned. Some guys have good luck with running a tank full of gas with some seafoam in it.It will clean your fuel system if it isnt too bad.
I wouldnt worry about jet sizes till you know the carbs are clean and find out what kind of shape your carbs are actually in.You could just have gummed up carbs.
Good luck with the new bike

Thanks a lot guys. Yea, I was reading a post last night by Fix, and someone suggested Seafoam. I think im going to go get some and get it in. Supose to rain the next 5 days, might as well let it do some work while it sits... This winter Im going to take the bags off and shoot some paint on them, they need a little work.

            Dirty carbs & seafoam

When I need to run seafoam through the carbs because of possible gummed up passageways, I use 1/2 can of seafoam to 1/2 tank of fuel. I run it for about 25 miles and then let it sit overnight. Next morning, typically, it clears up.
            Nice find, good luck.

Good looking bike! The "paint" is NOT supposed to look like that! I think you are seeing years of UV on clear coat. A wet sand and more clear should bring it back. If not, you may be painting ALL the bike!

                Thanks Cobia.
I was reading in the Maintenance section under Finish and was wondering... It says do not use steel wool on aluminum unless its brass or sainless... Then I clicked on the last link for other tips and it said to use steel wool and never mentioned anything about it being stainless... Anyone have any toughts about this? I already got some #00 grade wool, couldnt find any stainless or brass.... Also, what should I be using to knock off the surface rust on the crome? I have some Mothers Polish, is that ok to use on the crome and aluminum?

                DiverRay,

I swear thats not paint! Its a vinal coating, the side covers have the same texture...

                  Hi Wade & welcome,
nice bike! Y'know, I kinda like the crackle-finish on the tank, I reckon it'd cost a small fortune to have that finish done professionally. One thing to check that no-one has mentioned, how old are the tires? For sure if they were made in the last century they will have hardened enough to be a riding hazard. I bought a low mileage 1980 bike for my son back in 2002, only 5,000km on it from new and still had the factory Yokohama tires on it.
They looked great but they were hard as wood and had to go. There's an obscure code on the tire that'll tell you it's age if you know how to read it.
Sorry, I dunno how but perhaps it's in this list somewhere? Try our "search" thingy.

                    Eureka!

                    Hi Wade,
                    one reference, from MRO:-
"MC tires have a date code stamped on em.
Small smooth area about 1/4 X 1 inch.
Think first two numbers are the week and then year."
So if your tires say xx03 or better you'll be fine on them and anyhow, the rear will be worn down enough to change by this fall, right?

                              Seafoam

I use a full can of Seafoam with the tank just on reserve .Run it long enough to get into the carbs (10 mins approx) and let soak as long as possible . You cant go wrong . I leave a full can in a full tank( for stabilizer) in storage for 4-6 months of winter . Carbs are cleaner in Spring than when I put it away >This year it started up just like it had been running the day before . I use a weaker dilution in the riding season occasionally for a maintenance treatment . I wonder how it would work in the sonic cleaners ?
