Hi guys, what a story I have for you. Just to let you know Im a young guy, about to turn 24 this June. I have been itching to get my own bike and to be set free on two wheels. Ive had plenty of dirtbikes growing up and riding back home(Watkins Glen, NY). About a month ago I called up my Dad and asked him how he felt about me getting out his old '78 XS11 std and getting it in riding condition, he thought that was a good idea. He called me up about two weeks later and said, "hey theres two XS11's for sale in western NY (I live in Rochester NY) how you feel about goin for a drive?" Of course, I said hell yea. First bike we stop at, '79 XS11 with 16,XXX miles, all origional condition, turn key ready to ride. We took it for a little putt around and my Dad bought it on spot. Another hour+ drive south and were looking at a second one. This one is a '79 SX11F, full dresser with 31,7XX miles. It was well taken care of, came with the service and owners manual. All the maintenance was documented and everything. Had $650 of work put into it in '07, front breaks all redone, carb kit, front fork oil/seal...ect. It had only been driven 400 miles since '07! So we negotiate with the guy and struck a deal. He writes the the bill of sale and ask who's name is going to be on it and my Dad asked if I was ok with owning it. Just like second nature I said, hell yeah. Here are a few pictures of my bike. Ive had it for almost 2 weeks and have ridden ~250 miles. After I ran out the gas that came with, it started to run better, I think the PO had put cheap gas in it or maybe it was old...
Anyways, after I put some good gas in it I added some carb cleaner and ran that through. It still hesitates and breaks up all to shzit if I open it up too much too fast. Correct me if Im wrong but Ive been reading all the carb stuff I can on here and, would the first step be to adjust float level before changing jet pilot jet size? It seems to be rich all through the RPM range, starts kinda hard warm or cold w/no choke, pulles good from idle to about 3500 RPM then not much power beyound that. It breaks up more the faster I open the throttle at any RPM.... It has a Jardine 4-1 header/baffel and I havent taken the carbs apart yet but I have a good feeling the jets are stock... OK! well now that I have take 15min's of your life that you will never get back, take a look at the pics I have. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
P.S.
The last picture of the tank I was trying to get a good one of the coating on it. I believe it's a vinal coating of some sort, the side cover have the same texture... Weird, anyone know if this was a factory option?? There are a few scratches in it down where your "jewls" are but it's hardly niticable because it didnt scratch all the way through... Its definately a good from far/far from good kinda thing. Borderline ugly up close haha, thinkin about removing it at some point. Whats your opinion?
