Before you start tearing into it too far, take the left side cover off and watch the vacuum advance mechanism operate while the engine is running. It won't leak oil, and having the cover off might help you pinpoint the source of the noise. I've got a theory, but will wait till you do this and report back.

I had the side cover off earler today and the noise was not any louder there at all, took it off to watch the vacume addvance and to see if any thing was bouncing around in there, every thing look good, I sware I think it is comeing from the trany or the starter, do these starters ever hang up and not releace ?

        Hey cowboy,
Did you ever find you're rattling noise?I have a rattle that sounds like it is in the starter maybe.I know it isn't the advance. And I hardly hear it on the right side. But on the left I can hear it.It sounds like a loose bolt or something loose in there.
I'm thinking maybe starter clutch.but don't know yet.I've been searching and reading and haven't found a lot on noises like I have.
