  • Rateling noise

Ok, now is the time to ask, and I know i need to go in and fix 2nd gear, I have run the sea foam in the crank case and nothing changed the noise is still there, it is not the cam chain or the valves or shimes, it is a rateling noise comeing from the lower left side of the motor, my fear it is a bearing in the transmishion, kind of sounds like a bearing on a shaft going bad to me, any ideas ?

Check the heat shield on the collector of the exhaust.

Also check the connection of the VACUUM to the advance. It MUST be connected to the carb BODY on #2, NOT one of the four intake ports.

If it werent connected on the inside, it would not be a source for the rattle.

The line should be connected to the body of the carb, since that is "ported" vacuum. Meaning it is set up in such a way as the butterfly in the carb shuts off vacuum at idle. If you have it connected at the carb boot, this is open vacuum and the pulses at idle will cause the vacuum advance to oscillate at idle, making a rattling sound.

Without putting an ear to it, I can only suggest the typical causes, which have already been covered.

It might help if you can describe it more. is it a clunky rattle, a tinny rattle, sounds like bolts in a can etc...

Sometimes the reply does not work on here

Anyway, the vacume is hooked up to the number two carb
and the rattling noise sounds like a gear bounceing around a shaft to me, kind of a clunking sound I gess, dont sound like it is eating up anything, sounds kind of light not heavy any way if that makes any sence, how in the world can you describe a sound any way, lol. Now if it was a woman screming we could all relate to that, right, but it dont sound like that, thank god, oh well I gess I will figure it out sooner or later, may be when I do the 2nd gear fix I can see something.

Have you set the cam chain tension? Pretty simple to do, but do it right, or else lots more noise, then none.

Pull the left cover, rotate the crank in the direction of the arrow (clockwise, these engines spin backward) and stop at the "C" mark. then loosen the nut on the tensioner, next the screw. then gently (10 INCH-pounds is the spec I believe) retighten the screw followed by the lock nut. Over tightening either will strip the threads. Lining up on the "T" or TDC mark will possibly cause the timing chain to strip.

Just a suggestion... but if you have unknown noises in the motor, I would pull the motor and split the cases when I did the 2nd gear fix. Just flipping the bike and pulling the oil pan doesn't let you see the other things in the motor like crank bearings, starter clutches, etc.

Sometimes unsynchronized carbs can cause the HyVo chain, which is driven by the crank, to tension and relax, and that can cause a rattling sound.

                            Hey CB...

Not that I'm sure this could be your problem... but something Tod and I discovered on my XJ1100 when we tore it down to do the 2nd gear fix... We discovered the bearing that's supposed to be pressed onto the output shaft in the tranny was not pressed anymore, and could walk as much as 3/4" back and forth... and much catastrophe had occured because of it. Many damaged gears. Something to check out once you get it tore down, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that yours is something else less tragic...
                            Regards,
                            Bob

Behind the clutch basket, you'll find a hex head bolt with a heavy washer attached to it...it's all one piece, Yamaha calls it a "washer bolt, it holds one of the transmission shafts in place, it is possible that it has come loose and is rattling around below the clutch, or is about to be, I found mine laying loose between the clutch basket and the kick starter (it gets torqued to 51 Ft-lbs if I remember correctly) it was loose in there for a while as it was all chewed up when I found it. just a thought, have a nice day and ride safe
