  • Dead bike!

well I fired up the 78 and went to the video store no problems , I left on the way home come to a stop sign and bike dies no start no neutral light nothing, so luckily I am about 5 blocks from home and its mostly slight downhill and I push it home , battery is fine and so are the fuses(tc box) and the main as well, pull the headlight and check the main switch , red wire 12v brown nothing so Pulled the iggy and cleaned it up this is what the circuit looked like

    and the little contact thingy

    after cleaning

I am going to re install and see if that did the trick , any advice would be appreciated

You can lap that switch plate on fine sandpaper with a little water. Don't take it down too far That will make it like new.

      ??
Where did you find that part? Is the guts to the kill switch? or the keyed ignition switch?

          Hey Garth,
Did you check to see if the main fuse was OK? The inline one behind the battery?

Garth, I think what I read is that you verified you have voltage to the switch (red wire 12V) just nothing after it,(brown wire dead) Correct?

How about the wires in the connectors? Inside the headlamp bucket as well as the iggy ones.
Another thought comes to mind... could the tip over switch have gone bad? Can you override it? Just a wild guess considering the unusual circumstance. Looks as if something just shorted out to me.

I would occasionally have a similar issue, I would be riding along, minding my own business and all of a sudden everything is dead, no lights, no fire no brimstone, nothing. found it to be in this set of three wires behind the headlight bucket, can't remember what colors they were anymore. Got so that when she died, I didn't even stop the bike, just reached around the right side of the bars, grabbed a hand full of wires and gave them a good shake and keep on riding, I have since fixed the problem, but it took me near 2 seasons to get around to it. so check the wires again, what's it gonna hurt right . have a nice day and ride safe

                          solder

It appears to be intact. What a pain , it all looks like it should work but it doesn't

I have had the ignition switch apart, albeit a while back, but I do seem to recall that it was possible to get some of the parts out of alignment. You might want to take it apart again and double check.

                              Hey Garth...

As an electrician by trade, I offer my 2cents...
If you have a DVOM handy, and the switch is on the bench, place the DVOM in continuity mode and place one lead on the hot terminal and the other on the brown, (swithleg terminal), with the key in the run position, you should show continuity if the switch is good. Just a thought. Hope it helps ya.
