Assuming the clutch has been adjusted properly, your clutch plates may be grabbing.

Some here have had good success buying a can of seafoam and using the instructions on the can, run some through the crankcase just before an oil change.

Other crankcase cleaners may work as well. There may be sludge built up in the clutch, usually a result of sitting for a long period.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

        Hehe.

If I shift into first at too high a speed while coasting with the clutch lever pulled in, it will chirp the tire.

I have driven old tractors that shifted smoother than these XS critters.

Consider that a slap on the wrist from the bike Mine does that too, and it just reminds me to stay in 2nd until I am going slow enough to really need to drop into 1st (for emergency accelleration purposes).

Agreed. I sure do get into a lot of emergencies that require high amounts of acceleration. Things like stop signs. Need to get away from them fast, never know when one will get you. Red lights are even worse. Especially when some one on a bike is next to you. Extreme energency there. Sometimes I feel like I barely make it out alive.
