my usual caveat...i have no owners manual or repair manual, so i ask you guys.
*what is the capacity for oil in the crankcase?
*what would cause oil to make it into the aircleaner?
    any info apprecaited.

The oil capacity is stamped into the crancase next to the filler cap, 3000 cc's.
Some oil will get into the airbox from normal blow-by into the crankcase, the blow-by gasses are recycled through the air cleaner. If you have a lot of oil in the airbox, it's possible the crancase was overfilled.

      I'll play bad cop!

If the amount of oil in the airbox seems XSive, you might run a compression check if you have not already. If your rings are leaky, there will be XSive pressure in the crankcase which could also cause more oil to get psuhed through the breather into the air box.

Not likely, especially if it runs decent otherwise. just another option.

If you want a manual (I highly suggest having one, or both of them), you can download them for free. I host them on my website (link in my signature).
The air cleaner is often a foam element that has oil in it. Depending on who did the oiling, there may be too much oil in it, and it'll be dripping out a bit.

Way too much of it in the crankcase. The PO I bought Tsunami from didn't know any better, or how to check the oil level with the sight glass on the right side. He filled it to the bottom of the oil plug hole, much like what you would do with a lawn mower. It was amazing how much of it got pumped up into the airbox, ran out the vent hole in the bottom of the airbox, pooled on top of the motor, then rolled off onto the hot exhaust each time I turned a corner.

A similar effect happens when you have leaky petcocks and float valves, and most of a tank of gas floods through the carbs into the crankcase.

            Free manuals?!!!

Went to the website, downloaded the manuals, 2-side printed them, three ring binders. They are on my workbench now. Jeeze, sometimes the OCD works in my favor.
