well looks like i am going to have to do the 2nd gear fix, it went bangity bang clunk clunk and would not go in 2nd gear, just took it down the drive way, any way i am going to read every thing on here i can and when i get ready to tackel it I will more than likely have some questions.

It is not as bad as it sounds to do, although it can be freaky digging that seep into one if you never have before like me. Plenty of great help here and lots of folks that have done it so answers are typically pretty quick in coming.
Gears will typically run you $100 per gear for the new ones, and the new ones are backcut just as the tech tip explains to do to them. You might spend $40 on dremel bits or more if you need to buy the tool, I borrowed one.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

If you have about 1/10 a mile, try a "quick" shift from first, second and third, without letting out the clutch in second. Then if you have the room, go to fourth and fifth. You CAN run in fifth at 30 MPH without hurting the engine. This will let you know how well it's shifting in the other gears. If it's just second, back cut or replace the gears. If you have problems in other gears, you may want to pm Andreas about a used transmission. Bad or hard shifting in more than one or two gears CAN be a bent shift fork...Ray Matteis

Yeah, definitely make sure you can STOP before you wory about trying to GO! I had to do the fix on 3rd gear too, though that seems to be a rare thing.1980 XS850SG - Sold

With all due respect to DiverRay (and that is ALOT), I will say that getting used gears from Andreas is only half the issue. The repair that even Mother Yammie figured out, is to have the gears back cut like is shown in the tech tip. Putting used ones in, IMHO, i just prolonging the repair.
Now if you wanted to get the used gears from Andreas and then dremel them before install, that would make sense to me. And if it were me I would dremel back cut all of the gears, or at least 1st and 4th and 2nd and 5th while you have them out, I did for mine and no regrets. It is not that hard of a repair, but not one you want to repeat if you can avoid it.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

There are quite a few of us here in Kansas City. If you need any help with the bike I would gladly assist and I know some of the others would as well. Also, Russ79 has about any part you would need for one of these bikes and is also local. Andreas is also a very good source for parts.Harry

My main concern was NOT the gears, but the shift forks.... I think we ALL know the gears need the mod, but if the PO had tried to "keep it running" he may have fubared the forks. They are about $80 to $110 each, and that was two years ago! Being aluminum, they bend and score if they are mistreated.Ray Matteis

I can tell you from personal experience that breaking a shift fork is NOT fun at all. Thankfully I was just starting out from a stop light when mine broke. it's a very disconcerting feeling to go from 15 ish miles per hour to SCREECHING halt in a split second. let's just say it was inconvenient at best. be sure to check your shift forks, the alternative can be dicey. have a nice day and ride safeI am the Lorax, I speak for the Trees
