So I just bought a 140 Mph speedometer from renegade_xs11g, (great experience buying from him, not one complaint). I would LOVE to roll the odometer back so it matches my 85 mph speedometer. Does anyone know an easy way to do this without taking the bezel off/prying it apart?

How about hooking the speedometer cable to a electric drill or dremel tool and just rolling it over? Does this keep the numbers lined up? I've seen on other speedometers where they've rolled over but the numbers were slightly misaligned.1980 XS11SG

Have you actually seen this, or heard of it.
I think it's more of an urban myth, since you would wear out a drill or two going for 50-60,000 miles or more?Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Never heard/seen it, but it was the only thing I could think of other than taking the speedo apart.1980 XS11SG

Hey Dick,
What Craz was talking about was the misalignment part when it rolled over, not the technique of rolling it over with a drill. Instead of a drill, perhaps a DREMMEL tool with a fan blowing on it to help keep it cool, smaller motor, less energy used, and can spin to 10k rpm. I haven't done the math on the rotations of the cable part at that rpm and what road speed it would show, but would still take quite some time to roll it over as well as then take it back up to where he wanted it to be!? I don't know if it will work rolling backwards. I know the speedo won't display, but not sure if it would damage it, but I don't think so, thought it was just magnetic fields that pull the speedo pointer around, not any actual moving parts contacting the needle!?
If you do try a dremmel...btw I don't think they are reversible like some drills are, so it might not spin the correct direction anyways, but IF it could spin backwards, would spin it forwards first to see what road speed would be indicated at what dremmel rpm, so you might know what would be a safe speed to have the dremmel running at!?
At 100mph, that's 1000 in 10 hours, 2,400 in 24 hours, so might take several days to roll it back or over!

I gotcha, sorry about that, I have seen odometers slightly misaligned after they roll over but only on cars and trucks.
as a side question, how in the world are you supposed to get your front wheel off without taking off the fender also?! My fender's already off (well nearly, had to stop due to busted knuckles ) but it'll be nice to know for when i put it back on. and again, do i need to do anything special to the speedometer drive like pack it with wheel bearing grease or something? Thanks!Last edited by BigDick; 04-23-2009, 06:59 PM.1980 XS11SG

Just to note... hooking a drill up to the odometer does and will take the miles off... but as TC stated.. it would be a long process. I used a regular drill to try it and on high, it was showing like 15mph when I put it on forward. lol. I had a broken speedo cable that I chucked into the drill to stick up into the speedo housing.

yep, my dremel has a special tip for use with the long handheld wand thingy, (too lazy to post pictures of such) and it does take off about .1 mile every second, so it's not too slow. lol 13973.6 miles on the stock one, 31239.5 on the fancy one, makes 17269.9 to take off, so only about 172659 minutes or 2877.65 hours or 119.9 days of that dremel constantly running. Bust it open!
I think the best way would be to take it apart. I've had both my tach and speedo apart and, if you are careful, you can re-crimp the bezel and it looks exactly the same as before when installed. No visable evidence that it was ever opened. I believe there is a tech tip that explains how to take one apart.Tim Ripley - Gaithersburg, MD

Either it's late, and I'm not thinking right, or your math is a bit flawed. A tenth of a mile every second means 6 miles a minute.(360 mph!! WTG!!) 17269.9 divided by 6 equals 2878.32 minutes worth.. or.. @ 48 hours.
Still a long time running.. but not as bad as you thought.

Well... I guess just be glad the Dremmel turns the direction it does since they aren't reversable... unless you wanted to run it through the OTHER way and go 83k miles! lol.
