  • Final Drive modification

Hey Ya'll. Just doing some reading on the tips and posts. I have been doing some mods and things are going great. I have noticed that I get about 30MPG with this beast - her name is Laayla. Do I understand the final drive mod correct - I need to get an XS750 or 850 final drive PLUS its drive shaft. To make this mod. I ain't in no hurry. I probably will ride the girl all summer and do the mod this fall / winter sometime.
Whew, more work here than I thought!!!

You don't need the drive shaft - just the FD. You need a 17mm spacer on the end of the 11's drive shaft for it to fit properly. You have to pull the drive shaft out to put the spacer on it, and it can be difficult to line it back up with the u-joint. If you can't get it back in afterwards I would remove the swing-arm and the u-joint, assemble off the bike, and reinstall to insure you don't do damage to the u-joint where the splines fit. Probably the trickiest part of the operation. Other than that it's pretty straight forward. Tech tips had an excellent pictorial on the operation. Also, IIRC they recommend a '79 or later FD. Don't know why, but why tempt fate.

      750 Mod

It appears that a 81 XS850 will work also... correct?
      And thanks for the reply!!!!!!!!

My understanding is that any of the XS750/850 FD's will work. I looked at the fiche, and it looks like it should be OK, but mine is off a '79 750, so might want to wait for someone to weigh in who knows for sure.

Depending on how you ride you should be getting better than 30 mpg with stock gearing. If I cruise at 75 mph I can get about 40-42 mpg but if I do 100+ mph I'll get about 32-34 mpg. You may want to clean your carbs. Also I believe one of the final drives will lower your rpm a little more than the other, not 100% sure but could swear I read it on here before.

Pretty sure both the 750/850 FD's are 2.8 to 1 ratios, while the 11's are 3.3 to 1. Been wrong before, though.

We're running FDs off 750s and 850s on our bikes...

Now the guys over on the Triples forum told me that some of the FDs bolt up a bit differently and may not work... so maybe that's where the difference is in the year models?

Hmmm...and I thought it was the OLDER 750 FD that was recommended...as in pre 78.

Ratios are the same. 850 FDs are easier to put the big nut back on after you goop the spooge holes and cover them with a big washer. 750s are real sensitive to torque settings and gear lash adjustments. I just put an 850 drive on my 80 Special. Haven't been on the street with it yet but it feels terrific in the driveway.

Okay... I have a final drive in the shed from a 750-2D that i stripped years ago. Was thinking about fitting it over winter (southern hemispehere) but this thread has cast doubt on whether or not it will fit??

Also have the middle drive of same, will it fit and is there any advantage in it??

I used an early drive on my first bike, and just did a second early drive for my daily ride. They will BOTH work, as the gear ratio is the same. The ONLY difference you will notice is when you put the large nut back on after plugging the two oil holes is you NEED to watch the freeplay as you tighten the nut. The early FD's can have the gears bind up QUICKLY if you over tighten the nut.

besides mpg what benifit is to changing to the 850/750 final drive? Oh yeah Lower RPM's. Would that be more torque? I mean in practical riding what difference does it do?

More mph at a lower rpm. A tiny bit more clutch finesse starting out loaded/ 2up. I have had my Full Dressed with trunk '80G converted for a few years and enjoy the lower rpm on the highway and with my Ole Lady and I no problems as of yet.
