took a while to find the ring/pinion ratios.

shaft info much more difficult to come by but yes definitely need to add...would also like to add pertinent info on selected swingarms - Virago, V Star, Royal Star.

          shafts

I THINK THE 1980 XS850 SHAFT COULD BE A HOLY GRAIL OF SORTS BECAUSE I SAW ONE THAT WAS ON THE BAY WITH THE XS11 YOKE SPLINES "LOOKING" THE SAME....BUT THEN AGAIN I THINK THE COUPLER SPLINES ARE JUST LIKE THE THINNER XS750 SPLINES....WOULD BE CURIOUS TO KNOW FOR SURE....

Yep, yoke splines are definitely the same as the XS850 uses THE SAME U-JOINT as the XS1100

guessing the shaft splines for the coupler end are thinner on the "recessed" models due to the fact that they are constantly lubricated with final drive gear oil. ie: recessed pinion coupler splines = pinion coupler oil passages. appears that the XS/XJ 1100 and the 83-85 XVZ1200 Venture (Royale) where the only shaftys in Yamaha's stable that DID NOT have the recessed splines and oil passages.

              splines on couplers

When I researched the xs11 to xs750 FD swap, I found that the coupler to pinion splines had different numbers as well. This would also be interesting info to know because if the coupler could be swapped from any other FD we wouldn't even need a spacer?????

I did not include the Virago 535 or the V Star 650 as they used a completely different driveshaft design on the fd side.

wonder if the 2H7 coupler from the XS/XJ 1100 would be straight swap for the drives using the 4H7 coupler?

                  xschop,

When i did my 750 FD swap, I got both the 850 and 750 shafts to compare. Niether would work. 750 was too small diameter at the u-joint end and 850 was too short. i did the mod with the copper pipe spacer.

                    850 shaft

did the 850 shaft have the same YOKE splines as the xs11, unlike the 750? I believe the shaft changed one of the years of the 850 but not sure....chop

The older 750's used a type of CV joint in front instead of a U joint, that is why the OD of the shaft is smaller at the front. Last month when trbig and I did his FD swap, it came with a D/S still attached, and it was the smaller diameter shaft at the front.

                        XS850 drive shaft

Randy, do you still have that 850 drive shaft? the yoke end should have the same 21 splines as the XS1100 shaft as both bikes use the same yoke.

According to Yamaha's web site, the '80 and '81 850 shaft is the same p/n. Interesting that it is shorter than the XS1100 shaft. Would like to know its length.

                          Just FYI

I bought a brand new (NOS) 1979 XS750 final drive at Speed and Sport today for $260. They only had one so I snagged it.

Why did you buy a new one? Something wrong with the one you put in?

                              Brian_d,

Yes, the yoke splines on the 850 and 1100 shaft are the same as is the yoke itself, but i mocked up the drive assembly and the 850 shaft was way too short for the 1100 swingarm.
