hello, this may be a stupid question but someone has told me something i need to clarify. i took my bike for a ride to the local salvage shop on saturday. rode like a dream. got some parts for my xj1100 maxim at a good price. anyways i came back out of the shop and went to start it and there was nothing. no lights, power anything. i checked the fuses and seem to be good. someone told me there may be an oil level indicator that will not supply the bike with any power if it is low. is this true as i have never heard of this. the lights dont even power on. well i left it at there shop on staurday and they said they may get to it by the end of this week. just want to know if anyone has any ideas

I'd check the main fuse first. Another thing is the plug going to the ignition switch can overheat and melt. Happens on XS's, probably could on an XJ. HTH2H7 (79) owned since '89

Sounds like either main fuse or ignition switch perhaps. Do not know the XJ that well, but I have not heard of any cage or bike that has a proof of oil to allow power to turn on to anything or even to start. The most I have ever seen even on brand new stuff is either oil pressure gage or light to let you know if your screwed.
If it were me, I think I would get it the heck away from that dude. Being the fairly suspicious type that I am, I kind of wonder if they did not go out and dork with it while you were gettin parts to begin with. Seems kind of fishy to me anyway. But I am like the Wilfred Brimley character in the movie "The Firm" ..."I get paid to be nervous when there is nothing to be nervous about".Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Havn't had an XJ but..
The fuses "seem good"? Did you check with an ohm meter or just look at them? Are they the glass type? If they are, they can burn at the caps where you can't see them, so they might "look" ok.
Did you check the battery? Just put a volt meter on it to see if it is completely dead.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY
If I can do it at 18 yrs old, anyone can

I am placing my bets on the glass fuse. Throw a new one in and see if it works. Can't hurt.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY

Main Fuse is under the seat...
Hey Cowboy,
Had that happen to me a couple of times on my XJ and it was the main fuse that's either in front or to the rear of the battery. It's an in-line fuse on a wire that crosses from one side of the bike to the other. BTW - It looks like a connector because instead of being round, like a regular in-line fuse holder, it has a compartment for a spare built in. My fuse looked good and I got away with wiggling it a couple of times, but eventually when I pulled it due to lack of cooperation it came apart in my hands. One of the caps had separated from the assembly.
Good luck.1980G Standard, Restored

Kill switch?
Hey Cowboy,,,did you check the engine rocker kill switch on the right handlebar? That would cause all the issues, its happened to me when I inadvertantely push the knob when getting off. Anyway, hope thats it and not an electrical complication,,,so check it out. Good Luck, Mike in S.Diegomike
