Ok so while I have this thing pulled apart AGAIN. I am going to remove and reclean carbs since they sat all winter. I am switching to pod filters for the ease of removal when I reassemble. problem I have is this. I will either be running modified 4 into 2 exhaust or posibly a 4-1 if the deal works out. If I jet the carbs for a 4-1 and the pods at 145.0 for the mains and 45.0 for the pilots what happens if I end up leaving the stock 4-2 exhaust or end up with the stock headers to modified muffler setup?
Do I just loose fuel efficiency by jetting to high, or will I not be able to get it tuned to run correctly at all? I am poor! a newbie! and the wife is not always happy with my rebuild obsession. so I need to spend as little as possible but get it right the first time (when possible...lol)

Jets are cheap, and it wouldn't hurt to have a couple sets handy, in different sizes.
This guide helped me a lot.
If the sound coming from the bike is dry and crackly like a deep fryer, it is too lean, if it it soggy and wet and burbly sounding it is rich. It is better to be a touch rich than to be lean.
It truly is a trial and error process, and takes a bit of a trained ear.Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.

The 45 pilot, 145 main, 4-2 or 4-1 w/pod configuration should be a good starting point. if you choose the stock exhaust, you will possibly be running a bit rich. You will just have to experiment. The jets are cheap, 2 for $6.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Ok so for all the jets give or take should be around 24 bucks. What size mikunis (sp?) are on the 79-xs1100 special. What should I be asking for besides the right amoutn and sizes.

Yes. I know that XS650 sight doesn't mention those jets will fit your carbs. Those are the correct ones, other Mikuni carbs share the same jets. Bring an old one of each along to the dealer just to make sure if possible.Last edited by bikerphil; 03-24-2009, 07:54 PM.2H7 (79) owned since '89

145 mains is going to be way too rich....
You are talking going up THIRTEEN sizes from stock. I have pods with a big bore kit. I do have stock exhaust though.. but I only went up ONE size on my mains to a 115. My bike is a touch lean and I probably need one or two sizes more, but I wouldn't go over a 120 to start. Even with the 115 mains, my pipes don't blue.
I also think your 47.5 stock pilots will be fine.
Just my opinion... but you certainly won't burn anything up trying this combination.

Hey Tod,
Gary (gk45241) has 79 carbs with the covered pilots. I think the mains in those start off at 137.5 or something like that right? I thought the pilots started at the same 42 as the later carbs, but I am just a babe at this stuff, trying to learn.
Gary's were the first set of early carbs I have seen in person. Surprising how much is different as far as the location of the idle screw and all, expected the difference in idle mixture screw.Last edited by DGXSER; 03-25-2009, 06:57 AM.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

So is his YICS still operational? That will also richen up the mix a bit as it draws from the other carbs. If using the early carbs, you'll probably have better luck at tuning it with the YICS plugged.
Also.. remember that the later bikes had the larger valves with a little less compression, so you wouldn't be right on with the jetting if it is set up stock for a 79 motor.
Maybe someone else has a later motor with early carbs that could recommend a jet combination.. But if it were me and money was a bit tight, I'd leave it as-is, throw some pod filters on it and see. It is going to be close enough to where it's not going to hurt it.. and may not need to change mains. The leaning a bit of the air mixture with the pods may over-ride the YICS richening and put the bike spot-on.
The biggest thing to remember.. is not all pod filters are created equal!!

Ummm.. Never mind. Sorry. I thought DGXSER was saying that bcknblkbird's XJ in question had 79 carbs.

I would put the exhaust you end up with and pod filters if thats what you want and ride it a bit.Then check to see if you even need to rejet.Chances are you it will be pretty close to what you need already.But if you need jets,I had to get some for a set of carbs I rebuilt last summer for a friend who also rides an xs.I went to yamaha and they had them in stock and they were like $3 a piece.80 SG XS1100
