78 XS11 Original Color

Anyone know what the original color of the 78 XS1100 Standard? I'm thinking of having mine repainted and want it close to original. I had mine painted a while back to a burgandy color, but since then, it's got some chips on the tank. Also, I found an original seat, that I want re-upholstered and to re-paint the seat trim.

I'm in the Orange County (So Calif) area. Any of you local dudes know someone that could do this for me for a reasonable price?

I've been off the bike for a few years and the other day, I re-built the carbs and replaced the fork seals (Boy, what I chore!). It's now running again like brand new. I was going to sell it, but the ol' lady talked me out of it, for she knew my heart wasn't in for letting it go. Overall, it's a good looking bike and I kept it covered in the garage, except I forgot to drain the carbs of gas.

Now, I want to repaint it and polish up the various covers on the engine. That'll teach her, because now I have another project to keep me occupied

Macho Maroon it is but there's no mixing formula and it's not a standard color you can ask for at a paint shop. If you want the true color you will have to get your hands on a NOS body part and have a paint shop take a computer reading to come up with a close mixing formula.

As you were told, the color is Macho Maroon. The original paint had quite a bit of 'pearl' in it; that's why it would 'glow' in bright sunlight. That may be hard to match.

For cost, I'd figure $6-700 at least for a original paint scheme with the pinstripe and clearcoat. I was quoted $500 for just the tank here (Washington state).

Those numbers are in the ball park and that's why when I found a "near" NOS full set of body parts for 525.00 I snapped them up before the seller changed his mind.

Thanks for the replies. If it makes a difference in price, maybe I'll stay with the current non-stock color. Anyone know a "ball-park" figure for just a paint job, nothing fancy. I'd like an idea of what price is reasonable before I go hunting for a paint shop (if I can find one). The tank has a couple of spots that has the paint chipped off.

BTW, what does "NOS" stand for. I understanding the meaning.

NOS= New Old Stock. Old Stock part, never been used.

I have used touch up paint on mine for such chips. Of course mine is a twenty footer anyway.

The price for a paint job in LA will be a little lower than here, but not much. I think I have an "original" tank in storage, so I can take it to a local shop and have a Dupont color code matched for it.
The cost of a paint job is high in California, and you NEED to have a clear coat put on, with hardener. I think it would be about $600 here in Santa Cruz for an inexpensive job, and about $1200 for a "high end" paint job. Ask at a couple of local shops, and check with some of the people that work at body shops. Sometimes they will do "side jobs" on the weekend, and not charge near as much.

That's about right ... I just paid

$600 for this two tone job. Color was PPG Waterborne PRV5591. It is a rich magenta pearl metallic and although not original, it's 'in the style' of the original, if that makes any sense.
