mudgurad problem

I have been looking for about a year for a replacement mudguard for my SG.The original one was cracked and that is where the TCI unit is mounted.So i got a piece of plastic that we use at work to make machine guards for the printing presses.I think it is either PVC or some other type of hard plastic.The plastic has to be cut with a saw.I mounted the TCI unit to it and attached the piece to the rear mudguard.So today i was at my storage unit looking at my fuel filter replacement and took the bike for a short ride maybe 50 feet in the complex.I heard this rubbing sound and looked at the mudguard and realized it was hitting the rear tire-not good.So i pushed it up where i knew it would not fall down and drove to Moms house to fix it.I removed the mudguard and the unit from the mudguard and drilled 4 holes in the plastic piece at each corner to use ty-raps to hold it into place-perfect.Now the TCI unit will not fall onto the rear wheel area.The piece of plastic i used was just the right size so it acts as a mudguard also.Pics will follow.

Gee I wish I had known I think I have one that came with a box of parts that was included with my standard when I bought last year. I'll take a look and see if I still have it.

Thanks-I tried alot of people and places.I tried Andreas Weiss,Bike Bandit and several salvage yards.I had one guy who was parting out a XS 1100 awhile ago,he never replied back to me and found another salvage yard that had a no returns policy-even if it was the wrong part that they sent!My repair that i did is pretty solid as i used the good Thomas and Betts ty-raps with the metal tang that locks the rap in place.The TCI unit is held in place using nylon lock nuts and the ty-raps are the UV resistant type.Besides they are located under the seat and wont see the sun.The seat does not hit anything and now no noise!

I have 2 extra inner fenders, I know 1 came off a 78 standard,

Weld it

Hi Oldyam,
I have had success oxy-acetylene welding up vibration cracks in motorcycle fenders. The process puts them back together just fine and the welded seams are better looking than plastic and tie-wraps. If you paint the fender after welding the weld seams hardly notice at all.

Fred- Plastic is cracked not the metal fender itself.That would be too easy!

Even better yet-While looking on E-Bay the other week i found that someone was parting out a 79 Special.Looked at Bikebandit and found out the part # from the 79 is the same # as on my 80SG.$6.00 and it was mine.I got the part last week and installed it on Wednesday.Part was in Excellent shape and looks great.
