  • Rubber Boot on Drive Shaft (where to get it)

    Greetings all,

Looking under the back end of my XS a while back I note that the rubber boot on the drive shaft is showing signs of serious wear. Does anyone know know if there is an aftermarket replacement for this (or am I restricted to what Yamaha has in their old stock bins....) -- or a generous smear of silastic all about the thing........

What solutions have other people used?? I think at one stage when financially challenged I was thinking of knocking up a canvas replacement........

    regards
    Bruce

    Hey Bruce,

IF the wear isn't too severe that you can patch it, that's a possiblity.

Otherwise, there are no aftermarket sources for this, it's YAMAHA, was $35.00 back in 2000, sure it's much more.

It is a dust cover only, not a wet chamber. There's actually a hole in the bottom to allow any leakage of middle drive oil to flow out there. Might find one on Ebay, but condition would be questionable.

Was thinking that a flexible dryer vent hose might work, ribbed plastic wouldn't be flexible enough and would probably crack from the repeated flexing and heat. Rubber is about the best thing. Don't know about being able to source a big enough diameter piece of flexible tubing that could be used in place of it, along with being able to clamp it to the parts, the OEM having that nice groove that the spring fits into to seal it and hold it.

I got 2 from Parts n More awhile back.
I was thinking a driveshaft boot from a front wheel drive car would work (despite the shape of the large end). They make the split boot that might go on easily.

I got mine from Andreas. Price was reasonable and the part was in great shape.

              Yikes! That price is xxxxxx!!

              Hi all,

Thanks for the comments here. Yikes that price is, well, what I might have expected, and if its in Oz dollars its now substantially more that it was six months ago.

Yep, T.C., I agree, rubber is the best.......wonder if an old inner tube might be cut/forced into something approximating the right shape? The great virtue of the original boot is that its just set and forget for twenty five years whereas with the silastic fix or any other cobble up fix its a matter of continually checking if its still holding up or not......yet I guess the potential cost of what a slow ingress of water might do over several months before its noticed makes the cost of a boot that "really" fits and works look a bit more reasonable........

So.....I guess that for the short time its the silastic fix while I think about something else. I'm still thinking about making a canvas shroud - easy enough to get the overall shape for both ends by sewing it into a sort of cone shape - very flexible and tough, and easy enough to waterproof with wax/oil/silicon etc.....AND the cost would be just right.

              thanks again
              Bruce

They both have the same P/N, so I would say yes.

Rubber Boot on Driveshaft (where to get it)

I got one for mine a couple of months ago at www.servicehonda.com
                        They are priced at:
                        Rubber Boot #2H7-22189-00-00 @ $29.31 .
                        Spring #90506-07136-00 @ #3.85.
                        Spring #90506-07135-00 @ $3.85.

I've had dealings with these folks for years with no complaints.
                        I hope this is helpful.

Hey Lucky - I couldn't find the parts at that site. Perhaps they no longer carry them? They don't have ANY parts listed for XS100.

                            Rubber Boots on Driveshaft

In the parts look up section, they do not give XS1100 as a selection. To the right of the selection options you can do a search and all XS1100 models will pop up.
Now this is not in the "easy" parts look up screen. You must select the look up to the right of the "easy" one.
I hope this all makes sense.

Also there is a look up by part number on the site. Just plug in the part numbers that are in the post that I sent earlier and you will be in business.
