  • Help Gas in my oil

    Hi Guy's
I've done some reading on this and I want to make sure my thinking is correct ? First I pulled both lines off my petcocks in the off position, wanted to make sure they worked when shut off. Only did that on the left side, then on the right side I pulled the line off the tee going to the carb with the petcock in the off position it was fine until I turned the gas to the on position then gas came out of the tee ? Does this mean my Octy isn't working ? That's what I'm thinking.Btw drained oil 1/2 oil 1/2 gas.
    It's a 1980sg all original 11,000 miles.
    Thanks for any help !

Your two faced....and you have a drinking problem.

Well..your problem is two faced anyway.

From what you described, your Octy (since you have a special) is not working. Fairly common problem and you can get a rebuild kit for it. Or, like many who have gone before you, you can chuck it and simply pipe your ON position petcock outlet to your carbs. Your options on the prime outlet are to T it in as it is now, cap it off, or run a fuel line between the two (such that they would essentially feed each other).

The other side of your difficulty is the float valves in your carburators. The Octy is not the control for gas flow into your carbs, it just controls if flow can get to your carbs based on whether or not your engine is running. When the engine is running, it constantly allows fuel to flow to the carbs. There is a float with a valve in the fuel bowl that stops the fuel from flowing into the carb when the bowl hits the "enough" line. Your carbs don't know when to say when!
Since you have fuel in your oil, and most likely a nice puddle in your air box if it is still stock, they are not cutting off the fuel flow when the bowls are full. You need to pull the carbs, and clean and or replace the needle valve and seats, and check your floats especially if they are the older brass ones. I think the 80 models had the newer plastic ones though.

      Thanks for the info

This might give me a drinking problem before its over ?
I was fairly sure the Octy was bad, a rebuild kit would be great I haven't seen one all I found was a new one on Bikebandit $93.02 kinda pricey !
I cleaned the carbs last year and everything worked great I thought ? I guess I should have put new needle and seats in then ? Not much gas in the air box probably because it's on the center stand ?
Any other suggestions ??? Octy rebuild kit where ?
      Thanks again !!!

Not sure where to get the rebuild kit, others have mentioned it. Mine is sitting on my tool bench. I piped it out of the picture. Maybe one day I will reseal it and try it again.

George fix on EBAY has the rebuild kit for the octy. Also check partsnmore,I think they might carry them.
I took my octy off and really never shut the fuel off and mine doesnt leak.
So like was already alluded to,your needle and seat are leaking.Or under the seat(float valve seat) is an o-ring,pull the seat and inspect those , they are a common problem.
          Welcome to the club.

thought I would throw my two cents in on this conversation. Check out this link on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fuel-...em370174721406 or this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAH...em200321443606. These are listed as petcock rebuild kits. If you look at the picture the square piece of rubber with the small piece of metal in the middle is for your OCTY. It is all you need to rebuild the OCTY and make it as good as new. The other parts are for the petcocks. This is what I used when I did mine and I have not had a problem with my petcocks or the OCTY. Another tip, when you are rebuilding the petcocks, don't get over zealous about it by put a little more bow in the metal ring that you will find in there. It will provide a little more spring that way after reassembly and the petcocks will seal better in the off position.

                Hi Gregg,
as has been said, there are two problems, your octy don't shut the gas off and one or more of your carb float needles isn't seating.
For sure the carb needles have to be fixed. In theory once the carbs are OK you don't need a working octy. Yeah, right.
I'm with those who think the only good thing about an octy is the pretty splash you see when the octy hits the river. Others like them and yes they can be fixed. And all nine hoses replaced.
My XS11SG came to me with it's octy already missing. First I put blanking stubs on the prime fuel stubs and tried to remember to turn the taps to OFF when I stopped just like the old days. Then I swapped in a Standard gas tank and those tanks have vacuum taps.

The only difference between men and boys is the size fo their toys. With age the toys just get to be more expensive.

As to which one is leaking, sure, take the bottom off of your air cleaner box, open your fuel taps to let fuel into the carbs. You will most liekly see fuel flow out of the air manifold to the leaking carb(s).

I don't think that 50+ is all that old for playing with these things, being there myself. I'm just getting started tinkering on mine, once I get my replacement engine in then I'll start on a full rebuilt with a bigbore kit, figuring on a couple of years to get that done. Who knows, by then maybe I'll have a second xs11.

Ya like I am going on 59. In most situations I know my age - The 1100 tho makes me feel 21 again so screw the age thing!!! Most guys at 21 today would think the work necessary to get an old 1100 up to speed is not worth it. I tell you what, in my case my machine makes me and the wife young again. Can't put a price on that!!!
