i had some no go problems and thought i had solved the problem by cleaning the ignition switch connector... (it had gotten hot and was very corroded). so on to the carbs. got the carbs to stop leaking and the bike suddenly quit.
the main fuse had 2 blobs of solder on the cap . the plastic was slightly melted and the fuse was dead. replaced the fuse. nogo. power at the red wire on the main fuse. no power at the red wire input on the ignition switch.
made a jumper with alligator clips and went from top of main to the input red wire at the ignition switch. it worked... lights/tried to start. my question? is that a solid wire thru the harness from the main fuse to the ignition.. my interpretation of the wiring diagram says yes... so i should be able to ziptie a lead along the harness between the two? yes? don't really wanna cut the harness wrap and chase down the bad portion of the wire. so anybody know for sure that it has no other connections along the way?

If you still have the original fuse box I would STRONGLY suggest starting by replacing it with a blade type box like TK sells. It's far more reliable and for that matter has a high likelyhood of being your actual problem.

      fuse box

i have it..just not installed... but my prob is definitely in the wire. i get 12 on top and bottom of the fuse.

by the way... i notice there is a big red wire on the finned unit under the tank.
any idea where this one comes from?

on the fuse block replacement do you have to lengthen the wires?
and where do you get the spade connectors?

I seemed to get that too, but still had trouble and replacing the fuse box fixed it. Look under the tech tips, there is an article on doing the fix.

The spade connectors can be purchased at Radio Shack or any auto parts store.I have actually seen them at Wal-Mart also.As far as the red wire i think that you are talking about the main fuse.Check that as if that goes it wont start.Should connect to the left side if you are sitting on the bike.
