  • Leftside oil seal

    Does anyone have a picture of the pick-up/gov. oil seal? I just want to make sure I have the right one BEFORE I pull the old one. I used the info from this site to order one and I recieved a Federal/ Mogul with the part no. 223240. Wish me luck.

    If you searched the threads, and found the one about the seals, you are probably good to go. Just remember, the original seal has an INSIDE LIP that locks on the cases, so it will be a bear to pull!! Just do so carefully, and use a little semi-hardening sealer for the outer rim of the replacement seal.

      I've got a new one around I could photograph ...

      if you really need or want. Size should be 32x48x8mm with no bead on the outside edge. Don't think you can squeeze the factory style seal in there with out a case split. I used a Viton one but a Nitrile one would work as well. Viton has a higher heat tolerance.

      Like the Diver says, take care not to gouge the seal cavity when digging it out ... they tend to come out in little pieces. Couple hours of belly time unless ya' have a lift ...but not really a bad job or too hard at all. Fixin' it does wonders for the toe of your left boot too

        Fixin' it does wonders for the toe of your left boot too
        Yeah, no longer a waterproof left boot, now they BOTH get wet!

          I can always tell which is my left sock, oil stain on my left toe. Thanks Guys

            That's funny, justme, ...

            So as not to descriminate against the 'right' boot, and just to even things up some, you could try leavin' the oil cap off and ride out a tank of gas .... right boot and sock will come close to matchin' the left ... don't ask me how I know.

                  Don't forget

                  To check for a slight groove in the end of the crank where the seal rides. If there is a groove, no new seal will stop the leak. Trust me. There is a sleeve available that can be installed over the end of the crank, in effect renewing the surface of the crank, preventing the leak. The P/N is National 99128. It will fit both ends of the crank.
