      Clymers?

      Its thoroughly detailed in there.

I haven't done it myself (need to), but I've researched it on here. Found lots of info. Might try another search??? I believe I searched for "valve shims" or "valve shimming" or the like...

Not sure what you're asking here, but the 3-4k vibration was an issue with the vacuum advance. It isn't a problem and causes no problems, but people find it annoying.

Yamaha sold a replacement vacuum advance unit, which I believe is no longer available.

The top end SHOULD be a bit noisy when it's cold. The valve clearances are at the max when the motor is cold and takes a little warm up before they go away. If you get no valve noise when you start an XS, chances are your valves are too tight and need to be checked.

To check the valves, take the valve cover off (20 bolts), and the timing cover (left side (4 bolts).

Using a wrench that fits the wrench flats sticking out of the timing mechanism, turn the motor over (in the direction indicated by the arrow on the timing plate).

This is easier if you have the spark plugs out, too.

Watch the cam lobes, as you turn. Every time one of the lobes is pointing directly away from it's valve, use your feeler guages to check the clearance.

At this point you will know if you need to change any. If you do come back and get the rest of the procedure.

A manual is always handy. The clearance varies by year, I am not sure if the XJ is the same as mine or not, but I am sure someone will chime in.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Steptoe, those smaller clearances you show for the 80 models are also for the 81 models H, SH, and LH. Since it was for 80 and newer, I would think it would also be for the XJ, but do not have an XJ manual.

It certainly won't help, but it depends on WHAT is making the noise(s).

Some noise at startup is normal. It takes a few minutes for the motor to heat up, reducing clearances.

It also takes a bit to get oil circulating, more so if your using thick oil in cold conditions.

                    valve clearances

if i thought i had tight valves the first thing i do is throw a compression test at the motor, that would tell you if they were riding or not,as long as the rest of your motor is good

Only if you do the test while the bike is hot.

Even if they are tight, when cold you will get good compression, otherwise the bike wouldn't start at all.

Personally, I would just do the tune-up including checking the valves, and setting the cam chain tension, etc.

THEN, if it doesn't work go deeper.
