as daveyg's pics clearly show, the crashbar function really works to keep road rash off the bike, so yeah, crashbars are a great accessory.
But keep your feet off those forward pegs. The stock footpegs put your feet under your arse so you can take your weight on them if you need to.
The forward pegs put your legs out straight and bend your backbone the wrong way so when you run over a bump you take the hit right up the spine.
Then the next place you go is to your chiropractor.
Well Fred they are for the highway. My seat on the Maxim has me sliding too far forward and hwy pegs would help me stabilize my position quite a bit

I am making a new batch of YICS Eliminators that will be one size fits all. It will work in the XJ550, XJ650, XJ750, XJ1100 and the 83 XJ900.
      Thanks,

        Hi Madmax,
your highways must be a lot smoother than the ones in Saskatchewan.
Me, I'd keep my feet under my arse and rebuild the bike seat so it didn't slide me forward.

Well, on my ST1100 I have folding Hwy wings and I use them quite alot...they are great for having another position to rest and stretch out. My seat on the ST is quite comfortable and well padded...On my XJ1100 I did have the seat reshaped and new foam added but its still has me sliding too far forward...The seat is adequately padded so not to be too harsh in shock absorbtion. I dont think our roads are better than yours...I have no basis to compare...but I find that the scenario you describe Has yet to happen to me...I am fairly attentitive and if I forsee the rough road ahead then I am off the hwy pegs and back on the regular set. Thing is the XJ seat is the stock seat...if I go to an aftermarket design I would most likely wind up with something more comfortable...but then I'd have to spend at least $300.
I am sure many fellow XSives have used highway pegs/bars with little discomfort even over the rough spots as you describe. To be honest I have had more injuries riding my mtn bike in the woods than a m/c on the highway.

I am of the side that can't stand forward highway pegs. They are horridly uncomfortable.

I'm with Fred, although I put my feet on the REAR pegs from time to time.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I miss the highway pegs I had on the last XS11. They gave me a third position for the legs, and allow me to ride an extra two hundred miles without feeling it. I did NOT use them on bad roads, or on the twisties. They are, after all, HIGHWAY pegs!
We all have different styles and likes when we ride, and the forward pegs are just one "design change" that can be easily made to most bikes.

I have a set of folding hwy pegs, and though I don't have the experience with long trips that most of you guys do, I tried them out a couple weeks ago for the first time, and I can definitely see how that extra position can help keep the blood moving while driving down long, flat, empty roads. I wouldn't want to use them in traffic or if there was any chance of something unexpected happening, but they are nice for the long stretches.

Often when riding long distance, I'll use the rear pegs for a while to stretch the legs.

I've tried that but after a while my center "peg" starts to bother me.

highway pegs are a must on freeway... I am 6'2.
Just like the cruise control aka throttle clip on long trips.
It actually took me a while before loosing the habit of using them in traffic. Real bad habit, overuse of good thing...
