Rear fender clearance

A quick hypothetical question about chopping an XS11. I have a welder who has suggested that I mount a rear fender to the swing arm so that we don't have a clearance issue and don't have to drop the bike (so we avoid stressing the CV joint). It looks like there is a ton of clearance between the rear fender and the wheel. How much is needed? ie: does anyone know the vertical clearance needed to avoid rubbing the wheel?

I am looking at switching out the seat for a solo and keeping the same shape for the rear fender, only with less clearance.

I only have a little over 2" clearance for my rear fender. I have hit some good pot holes including a 1' drop once and don't think it ever rubbed. I do have adjustable Showa MAH 671 shocks that are pretty hard.

If the fender is swing arm mounted, then 1/4" should be good with the 16" tire. On the 17", I would use 3/8" as a minimum. The big thing is look at the over all size of the BRAND of tire you want to use, and THEN look for the brand with the LARGEST diameter. You will need a tire with clearance for the largest diameter you may put on the bike. Don't forget, a 140 WILL just fit the swingarm, if it's NOT a raised white letter tire.
You may also want to think about what you will need to pull to change a tire. Make the fender mount with 4 bolts, easy to get to.

Hey Jeremy....

If you actually TURN every now and then, you can get rid of a few of those little tabs on the side of the tire.

I would allow a bit more than 1/4" clearance, because tires to expand in the circumference at higher speeds! I experienced that with my new front tire, where the fender was fairly close, and on a high speed run it rubbed, bubbled the paint! I would leave at least a 1/2" to be on the safe side!
