I've searched the thread and didn't find any help. I have Original equipment caps/resisters on my bike. The replacements have a slot for a screwdriver to tighten. Are the old plug caps to be clipped off, or is there a trick to remove them? Maybe a dumb question, but I've looked all over for an answer. It almost looked like a metric allen wrench would work, but it doesn't. It doesn't look like a torx setting either. Appreciate any help. (81 XS1100 LH-MNS) Kim

The spark plug caps just unscrew. Turn counter clockwise on the cap while holding the wire as tightly as you can. I find about ten turns and then just pull off. Once you have the old one off, clip about 1/4" off the wire, so the new cap will have a clean wire to connect with.

Just Curious
Does anyone have a picture of one of these taken apart? Be interested to see where the break is, and what part is threaded where.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

spark plug cap picture
Cap for cyl 2-3 disassembled, comes apart with a flat head screwdriver. Note the small resistor. Cap for cyl 1+4 didn't have a slot to disassemble.

Thanks
Thanks for the pic Phil and the info. The mtal piece was on the end of the wire? that threads into the boot? Just checkin because I may try the cutting the wire back fix to see if that is my problem. Not having done this before I hate to pull when I should have twisted on something.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

No, the metal piece in the picture is what attaches to the spark plug itself. You don't really need to take this out unless mabye to test/clean the resistor. The spark plug wire just unscrews from the cap, very simple.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Spark plug cap
Hey guys, thanks a bunch. I never dreamed they just screwed on! With all the other electrical connections on the bike; that's a first for me! Kudos--I really appreciate the help. Now this is in the archive of knowledge. Thanks. Kim'81 XS11 LH (MNS)
