If show up ... it would likely transform from "Meeting of the Minds"...into "Meeting of the Mines" as in land mines.....

And land mines have been "banned"...

Thanks ... but I better pass.

hehehehe..GOTCHA! I'm proficient at playing the victim.

                Look...back to the thread...and reality.

Terminal velocity is dictated by two primary factors...horsepower and aerodynamics. A secondary factor is gearing...but if you don't have the steam (read power) to push the object through the air it doesn't matter what the gearing is.

Using the standard gear reduction calculation my C14 would in theory top out at 189 mph in 5th gear at redline of 10,500. (Don't ask about 6th...it's insanely high). However on a dyno (with no wind drag)the rev limiter kicked in at a little under 10,500 rpm and the dyno computer indicated the bike spun the drum at an equivalent 182 in 5th gear. Some of the discrepancy was in the accuracy of the tach and there is a little slip between the rear tire and the drum. No test is perfect...but it was close to the theoretical ...gear/tire calculated...189.

"...back to life...back to reality..." On the road ...in reality...I could only get it to 163 mph (GPS verified). However...the Jap speedo was indicating a tick over 170. It's just not aerodymanically slick enough for 149 rwhp to push the bike through the air anywhere near 189 or even 182. Air drag is huge ON ANY BIKE at those speeds even on a fairly aerodynamic bike like the new Concours.

An Eleven has even lower aeordynamic efficiency. Add to that the fact a stock Eleven is putting about half the horsepower to the rear wheel...

The top calulated ...theoretical speed...of a stock Eleven using gear reduction with a 130/90 16 rear tire is about 132 to 134 mph (depending on tire OD). I have trouble seeing a stock XS11 exceed that theoretical speed. Thus my "throw it out of a plane" analogy. Personally I've never gotten a stock XS11 to exceed 128 mph GPS. They are great old bikes. The fastest for their day...but...

I tell ya what.... if you think yours is exceptional... then be accurate about it. Ignore the notoriously optimistic Japanese speedometer. Get a GPS and prove it.

Glad your here to write about it!

I wonder how those gears in that middle box were doing
maybe ought to slow the OLD guy down a bit it and you might last longer or get a really good insurance policy!

Well I won't argue that. She has set me straight on more than one occassion at rallies...in e-mail...etc.

Rest assured my "technical" argument was not aimed at Kat...nor anyone in particular. I was merely making my case using a well established gear ratio formula and my "limited" experience with the XS1100.

8000 red line? Gee I thought it was 8500 rpms. If it is 8500 rpms 7500 rpms comes to... 116 mph. What did I say before...114? (BTW I just looked at mine and it is 8500 at red line.)

My experience is that they are quite chatty when they get to see big numbers

nice pic, what's the charge - no helmet?

checked the rear wheel for play, none, just like shiny chrome stuff on my bike, none either. The "ice patch feel" was not lateral, just vertical hoovering over the uneven asphalt me think.

Now I believe that if you clamp that throttle full when in 5th gear, this 600 lbs plus bike would atomize any speed recorded by an R6, even more so with the motorcycle trailer attached, in a comparative air launch.
