      Starter not engaging

My bike was doing the same thing this year anytime the temp went below 0C (32F) at night . I had the 20w50 in it .
Last year I ran 10w40 all year and had no probs .
Next year its 10w40 in the Spring and Fall and 20w50 in the summer . Also the first thing I'll do when it comes out of storage is dump the new oil I put in when I put it away .

Cold Cranking Amps. A fully charged car battery's worth of them.
Fredintoon is right. A really good charged battery will sling those clutch things out harder - engaging the motor to spin.

A weak battery contributes to problem; whirrr.

          Extra ground cable

I wonder if the extra ground cable from the starter casing to the battery gound cable a la Randy would help the CCAmps ? I plan to install this as soon as I get the cable .

            Axel:

You can never have too many grounds so one more cannot hurt. I think the problem lies in the grounds are the first place to suffer corrosion. One thing that will definitely help is to re-clean the battery post and clamps periodically.
