      oil pressure sensor

Mitch, all stock 78-81 XS models use an oil pressure sensor with no float in the pan for oil level, just a sight glass. 81 and up XJ's have the oil pan with the float for oil level.

4.2 quarts oil tank capacity? I've been going with the 3.7 quarts like the service manual says with filter change for my SG, do I need to add oil? I don't have an oil cooler and the SG in the ad doesn't look like it has one either. Which one is right?
You just pour in a set amount of oil? Go by the sight glass, it's full when the oil is in the center of the glass.

I have always bought the service manual for whatever I drive/ride and go by what ever it says within reason. I'm one of those by the book kind of guys.

            For sure

I know for sure that the '78 & '79 standards have an oil pressure light.

              Yep,

78-81 XS's have an oil pressure light. The light also doubles as a brake light warning light...if the brake light filament is burned out, the oil light comes on also.

The 82-84 XJ's have the oil level sensor instead, but no pressure sensor. IMHO, I would rather have a pressure sensor than a level sensor!?

These photos bring back some memories, me around 18 and just staring at them dreaming of having one some day. When Dad and I ordered our '81 850 Special (we went in 50/50) in the fall of '80, it was torture waiting until Spring to finally ride it. Never thought I'd own an 1100 back then.

The XS11 does have an oil pressure light, and the switch is located just below #2 & 3 carbs, right behind the cylinders and in front of the starter.
