  • My XJ spit the plug!!!

Fortunately it was the plug/cover for the timing chain adjuster mechanism. And of course it's dripping oil over the front of the engine.
Can this plug be purchased anywhere?
Or better yet, being the creative bunch that you are, what makes a good substitute for that plug? What do you folks use? I know I'm not the first one this happens to.
    Thanks

The plug is available through bikebandit. You'll have to clean all traces of oil from the tensioner before replacing it or it will leak again. Some guys use silly-cone, some use JB Weld (!).

I replaced mine 3 yrs ago with the OEM seal and used permatex gasket sealer. No leaks yet. (fingers crossed here)

        Cobis,

While you're there, order the o-ring for the lock screw.

One of mine has a small freeze plug pushed in the end of it.

For those that don't know or are confused by the terminology, a freeze plug is what is put in the jacket of a water cooled engine to seal up the casting holes. Supposedly, they pop out if the coolant freezes keeping your block from cracking. I have never seen this happen. A cast iron cylinder wall is weaker than a stamped sheet metal plug. Go figure.

          Looks like this:

              Randy,
I wish you would have chimmed in earlier. I ordered three of the plugs. Let me see if I can modify the order.

                o-ring

Hey Robert, you can get that o-ring anywhere, auto parts store or hardware store.

I bet you could tap it with a pipe tap and just screw a stainless plug in it.

Buy yourself and SWMBO a nice bottle of champagne. Pop the cork and save it for later. Drink the champagne and have a nice evening. Cut a disc off the small end of the cork and cut/file/sand it down to be a snug fit in the adjuster housing. Clean out the end of the adjuster body really well with a bit of acetone on a q-tip. Glue the disk in with a dab of silicone. Wallah!

                        You see, I knew it!!

I knew that this was not an uncommon problem, and that there would be as many unique solutions to it as there are folks who've dealt with it.
I just didn't know about temperature tolerances, etc.
                        Thanks

                          Stabil Cap

I used the smaller of the two caps on a container of stabil and some silicone. Now it looks like a small dial adjuster or something to that effect! Ive had no problems with heat so far. Just need to make sure you clean all traces of oil off the darn thing or nothing will stick to it.
Thats just my 2 cents worth.
