  • Heel - Toe shifter photos

A couple questions have come up about the Honda trail 90 shifter I put on my XJ. Here are three photos I took this morning:

Last photo shows the small relief I ground in the shifter so it would not hit the foot peg bracket when I shift. You can also experiment with the foot peg mount; it will rotate forward and back if you loosen the bolt, perhaps the relief is not necessary. Another option is to grind down the top of the bracket. Otherwise it was a bolt-on operation. Shifter is mounted 1 spline counter-clockwise from the original lever; this makes it more comfortable for me but is a matter of personal taste.

    Floor Pans

Where are the floor pans from?

      Jerry, three questions.
The shifter appears to be inside the floorboard. Is the shifter pads on center with the floorboard? If not can the shifter be bent so that they are?
Why are there two floorboards there, height?

Floorboards are from Drag Specialties and are marketed to HD owners. This set came from E-bay, had no hardware with them. I built my own mounts. Search using 'floorboards' or 'HD floorboards'and you will get quite a few hits.

Units with mounts can be had from a variety of sources. You need to look for the ones that have a male stub sticking out of them, fits most early HDs. I put washers on either side of the stub to make up the difference in the slightly wider Yamaha mounts.

Shifter pads are not centered on floorboards. Shifter could probably be bent, is steel and not chromed, would suggest heating it first. Personally would not go that route, as my emphasis is on long rides and bending the shifter would force the left foot a bit wider on the floorboard, not all that comfortable. I have no problems upshifting or downshifting with the shifter as-is.

2 floorboards, there are rubber 'doughnuts' between the layers to absorb vibration. Makes for nicer ride but does cut down cornering clearance. Single level boards are also available. Advantage is that you can get a lower foot rest (mine is about an inch lower than stock pegs) which changes the angle of the knees. I find this makes long rides more comfortable. Going with a single-layer would allow you to drop the foot rest even further. Mounts are also adjustable fore-and aft, meaning you can dial in a pretty comfortable leg position. I found that a slight downward angle on the boards also helps; when you ride the toe tends to point down slightly on your pegs.

Some people do not like floorboards; they do cut down on cornering clearance. However, most of my riding is interstate commuting or trips to rallies, and comfort tends to become a bigger factor. Since the boards fit in the original peg sockets and use bolts (original rivits removed when installing the boards) I can switch back and forth between the boards or pegs as I wish, but keep the boards on more almost all the time now. I find them more comfortable than the OEM pegs.

Thanks Jerry I will go to salvage and get the shifter and find the floorboards to try out. I also do most commuting and would like the lower foot position.
