Pay with a credit card. See if the bike works. When you pay with a credit card, you often will have some recourse against the vendor if things are not right through the credit card company.
    When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

I hate be an ass but you kinda forced yourself into this situation. You asked questions of the forum ignored the advice and sent it out to be done. I'm sure the forum would have helped you through it and an Ohio member would have lent a hand.
Now your stuck with a 2100.00 dollar bill and suspect work. Hell for 2100.00 you could have bought a bike lift all the tools needed payed in beer for one of the Ohio guys to stop buy and bought another XS11.
I hate to say it but your stuck now and I'm going to guess without much recourse if they guy botched the job. That and I'm sure when you take it back his response will be "piss up a rope. Really if need a shop to work on it you may want to consider buying something new and keeping the XS in the garage to look at.
I hate signatures. Too many cars and Bikes to list here.

I don't think they do either, at least not with the XS11.

Hmmm I think for the most part that to be true...however there are a few shops that really do know what they're doing. There is one abt 30 miles from me.I discovered this shop this past summer after TC and I had put a 3 day marathon into my '82XJ.So anyone who needs a shop in NJ-PA-DEL..the shop is called "Be A Biker" and they are located in Cherry Hill NJ...PM me for further info...their labor rate is $50/hourI might try and get some work with them... ya nvr know

D@mn it Jim,I'm an electrician not a mechanic. The bike was already in the shop when I asked my question .
I considered tearing into this bike all last winter, spring & summer as I worked 10 - 12 hours day, 7 days week driving 1.5 hours each way. I read & reread the manual trying to decide where to start & then I got a break in my schedule. Finally 2 mos ago, weekends off.......... Just when I had talked myself into giving it a shot,I ran into this mechanic who seems to have lots of credentials .....35 yrs experience...ex motorcycle drag racer .blah blah blah.... so I think to myself here's a mechanic trying to earn a living & I make my living doing electrical work .. I don't particularly want an unskilled person doing my job so why take his job especially when i have so little free time & no experience. The orig estimate was reasonable & after working all the extra hours,I didn't mind paying someone to do their job.... Thats how I got here,,,, not that it matters ; )
It's just me at the edge..........waving

QRFAN, don't get too terribly pressed about the hows and whys of where you are now, do what you have to to get your bike back, learn the lessons at hand. the only time you may want to beat yourself up over it is if you repeat the mistakes of the past. If you end up having to pay this guy an arm and a leg, so be it. lick your wounds and be ready the next time you need something done to your bike. I live probably 2.5 hours drive from you, I know there are others closer, next time give a shout out, one or more of us will answer the call, it is, after all what we do. In alot of cases, it is advice given over a forum, in other cases, it involves personal appearances and different cases (Beer cases). anyway, if you need assistance with a future issue, consult the forum before you take it to a shop, call for help, whatever. We all have been into things we don't know how to do and been helped by the folks on this fine forum. That's all I got for now, have a nice day and ride safe

                                Bike is home

I will spare you all the grueling details but the mechanic & I have come to a tenative agreement for now & will finish our buisness tomorrow.Bottom line, gasline coming off petcock still needs to be rerouted, bent like a garden hose trying to shut off gas.Compression is140 on #3& 4 cyclinders 125 on #1 & 110 on #2but not sure rings have had time to reseat. Smoke comes out right exhaust pipe when bike has warmed up..not sure what problem is there.I'll be back once this deal is finished & can start trouble shooting on my own.Talk to everyone then & Thank you for your support so far.
