ok so i disconnected the field coil and connected it to a battery for a very short period of time, like less than a second at a time, and it would attract a paper clip...I believe that its a bad connection somewhere. im going to try to find connector for the plugs exactly and hopefully that will fix it.
It seemed like a good idea at the time....

So i got it to charge. all it was was the plug that goes from the stator to the wiring harness. i had a stator laying around with a good plug so i cut it off and spliced it on to mine and it charges at like 14.4V now. So it will get higher in rpm's but it still sputters at about 6K rpm, but the plugs are fouled and i believe the jets i have in the carbs are too big...147.5..others with the pod filters and 4 into 2 exhaust have 145 main jets. my 145's mysteriously disappeared.....so ill tune it this summer.

Last Yamaha I owned had same electrical problem: connector from stator to system had corroded/burnt. PO bailed on bike cause "mechanic" replaced battery twice as the "fix". Third time mechanic said it needed new stator and rectifier. PO gave up and parked the bike until I bought it. I stuck my face in the system and found just what you did.

        Congrats on a successful "hunt".

Bike had been run in rain repeatedly and all those important connections were in same sorry state. I took the time to examine/clean all those that I could get at. Bike never stranded me due to an electrical problem after that.
