Ok I rode my 82 xj for a 50 mile trip and I found out it misses on exceleration up to 3000 rpms after that it will run like a bat out of hell. Than when I go to stop sometimes it will idle fine with a little miss and sometimes it will just cut off. Than if I try to start it up when it is hot I have to turn the choke all the way out to get it started again than its fine. HELP PLEASE.

Hi Joey,
I think we have similar problems. My xs1100 when I start it cold sounds like it is running on 3 cyl until I pull the choke full on. If I start riding it right away when I get it above 2000 rpm it runs great, below that it misses and pops a little. The difference is when mine gets warm it will ide ok if I have set for 11 to 1200 rpm idle. If I lower it to 1050 it will die everytime after a few minutes. I think it is a low speed jet problem because it runs good when on the main jet. I have decided to live with mine until it gets unbearable. I have no idea if this will work, help or hurt. But back when I worked on old cars I use to remove the air cleaner and put some rpm on the motor then close the choke butter fly while opening the throttle fly all the way momentarily to create a massive vacuum and suck everything out of the passages in the carb. Couldn't hold it at all or the engine would die but it use to clean or open a stuck passage sometimes. I guess in our bikes it would be like bring up the rpm and cover one carb to create a vacuum and see if it will open up a plugged or gummed passage inside.1980 Xs1100 MNS Sold for $1800

Whitish plugs mean very lean condition. Either the pilot (idle) circuits are plugged or idle mixture screws are in too far. Try turning them out a bit and see if it improves. If no improvement, time to do a carb cleaning. Put your air filter back in first before adjusting. HTH2H7 (79) owned since '89

Running without an air filter is probably not a good idea. Lots of tiny little pieces of junk can get sucked in an cause many a problem, if it hasn't already.
Yes, white plugs are an indication of running lean, something you don't want to do for too long either.
Like Blue Giant said, check out the tech tips and if you have access to manual that is a definite plus.
First of all try running it with the stock air cleaner in place and see how it runs. You may need to pull the carbs for a good cleaning and then set them up with a sync.
Tusler,
If it idles okay at 1100-1200 but not lower, you probably need a sync.Ernie

garthxs
garthxs if jesus was on here himself and he asked about a problem he was having with people not telling others about his great love would you tell him to go somewhere else and talk about his problems because this is a place to talk about bikes.
i understand that this is a site to talk about bikes but why not let your light shine and tell people about jesus as well. maybe even thank him for keeping you safe on each and every ride because alot of people are leaving this world on a bike.
why not do what the bible says in psalms 96 and 8 which reads
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name
because he keeps us each and every day.
if it makes you happy i will comment on the bike
first i would say it would be a good time to clean those carbs. these things are fidgity. if every pathway is not cleaned out like it were new then it won't run right.
next for starting. if you have the type of carbs. that have the pilot jet plugged then i would check your emulsion tubes below the main jet to see if the tiny passage just below the main jet hole is clogged this assists your idle circuit in getting an ample supply of gas to idle after 3 or 4 grand this passage stopsworking and the main jet takes over from here. after you come back to idle there may be enough gas to get through this small passage and then there may not be. all i can say about these bikes is they are fidgity little bikes. if everything aint right then it wont run right. espicially these carbs. if you have a bike with one carb and it is off a bit you can deal with it pretty easily but if you have 4 carbs. and one gets off then the one that gets messed up will fight against the other 3 and mess the whole thing up. i hope this makes sense.Romans 5:8

Just a reminder
Don't soak (immerse) the carb bodies in solvent. This will destroy the butterfly shaft seals. Also, they don't need to be seperated from their bank to be properly cleaned. Good luck!2H7 (79) owned since '89
