Hi guys I've seen alot of specs on our 1978E's & they all say that the gas tank can hold 5.5 gallons. I notice that even after running through half of my reserve(specs say 1 gallon reserve) i can only put in 3.9 gallons to the neck with bike the sitting straight up. Anybody with a 1978E able to verify how much gas we are able to pump if the tank was completely empty? Thanks guys

Hey Korr,
I hate to ask, but are you sure it has the Standard Tank??
BTW, specs say 5.3 US gallons.
The capacity you are describing sounds more like the special?
I can't remember seeing any photos of your machine. The standard has those knee indents, the special is the teardrop.

The only way to know for sure is to take a gas can with you and intentionally run the tank dry, and close to a station.Skids (Sid Hansen)

Korr,
I know you are close to my location. Send me a pm, and I can help out. I am "looking for work" once again, so I am free weekday's. I can probably ride over the hill and meet you for lunch at or near your work local. I will then be able to know what is going on with your bike.
I DID just put 4.7 gallons into an almost empty '79 Standard tank today. This should be the SAME tank you have on your bike. My thought is someone put a few dents in the tank, and just put bondo over them, instead of trying to pull them out.Ray Matteis

Korr-register with Photo bucket(its free)Take a picture if you have a digital camera-Does your laptop or desktop have a place where you can take the memory card and put it in? If it does then send it to your my documents folder.Once you have done that, log in to your Photo bucket account and upload the photo from your my documents folder. It should take maybe 10 seconds.Once you have done that,at the bottom of the photo should be some words. The very last line, highlight it and hit Ctr l C =copy. Then when you post at the end of the post hit Ctr l V =paste and then hit submit reply.Your photo should appear.1980 XS1100 SG

5 gal
I have put 5 gal in mine. I have a trick though. I cut a peice of Schedule 40 black ABS pipe to 5" long and it will fit rather tightly over the fill spout so I don't have to hold the rubber thing back when I fill up. Additionally, when on the road and going to get right back on and ride, I can fill up inside the tube several times and it will slowly bubble down and fill the tank much higher than normal. I have filled up this way on trips which give me a much longer range. Normally I have to stop for fuel at 140 miles, but when I fill this way I can go 175 miles and reserve is at 140 instead of 110.You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...

1978E Fuel Tank Capacity
Okay, I have the 1980G. I don't know fuel capacity for mine either, but the Specifications to the left on this page indicate:
Cycle magazine January 1978 says 4.2 plus 1.0 gal reserve Total 5.2 gals.
Cycle Guide Magazine January 1978 says 5.8 gals including 1.3 gals reserve.
I know it don't help, but thats what the specification page says.
Don't forget you have fuel in the carb bowls, fuel lines, and inline filters if you got them. It all adds up especially with the price of gas these days80XS1100G (Ebaybe) Whidbey Island, WA

Looks nice...
Alltho: 78 was only in macho maroon methinks... this looks like blue to me. Since it still has the stripes I assume its prolly an original color alltho I dont remember it.
Seat is from a H or something... euro 1.1 standard had such a seat - slightly lower in front than 78/79.
Not sure bout the engine... but I think only euro models had black engines. You definetly still have the kickstarter, but the clutch cover doesnt convince me. Mine have some fins on them.
Heres a pic of my 78 with 79 (model year was prolly 80, 1.1 eu standard in any case) seat/gas tank/side panels:
And the 78 with its stock stuff... eu models had XS 1100 on the sidepanels, but due to the kindness of our member here I got XS Eleven reproduction badges. I wont say who it was so you wont swamp him with requests
Anyway, this bike atm is in need of some mufflers, gearbox work etc... but has vetter fairing and cases on No real idea what to do with it since I really dont have the time to work on it.If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.

I actually cut out alot of the seat foam to put that indentation there. My side panels say XS eleven just like your second picture. So my bike could've been a euro model?1978 XS1100E Standard
