Yes I did check everything but the diode...and i mean everything tach works just fine replaced relay-fuse-checked battery-all wires it has a new fuse box just no darn headlight even checked lefthand control box ,everything on this bike is squeeky clean I did dielectric grease and all.so thanks if i'll have hi/lo beam then fooey on the diode I'm tired of shelling out money on this...yes I'd like it perfect but.I don't have a spare diode and don't have a clue where to purchase one.again thanks very much.

You can get a diode at Radio Shack for under $5.00.I have a spare one if you need it.Give me an address and it will go out tomorrow.

I don't know if I need one????? I have not unwrapped the original yamaha wrapping and to be honest don't want to but......if it's just 5.dollars ...well then maybe I'll check tommorow after I do a voltage check,does anyone one else have k&n pods with short fuel lines to connect to the tank??? it's a Biatch to do and not get leakage...could you please tell me the exact diode name or whatever code is necessary to get it from radio shck please and thanks yet again!!!! i mean it ....thanks from clyde too!(bikes name)

This post was from a while back: A diodes voltage rating is its maximum operating voltage (600 volt diodes with work with 12 volts, 12 volt diodes, if there is such a thing, will not work at 600 volts) . I would think that any voltage rating over 200 would work for anything on the XS11 other than the secondary coil voltages going to the spark plugs.

This is what i originally asked: diode question

The diode that is in my SG and others-What is the voltage that i need for repair purposes if it goes?I went to radio shack and saw 600v diodes and other ones.

I don't see why a larger capacity diode would not work.

so I tried the jump between the blue and red wire and when I went to put the negative back on it sparked thank goodnees I did'nt have the headlight conected then removed jump and the tried the bike no negative spark when i went to hook it back up And the bike started just no light heplp gurus! gotta be something has no diode was takedn out and the white wires are wired together no burned disconected wires has new fuse box,replaced reserve lighting,it burned out the plug to the light replaced with new setup had a blown light.replaced light.replaced fuses 10amp.lots of spark no problemo there just no headlight and the jump was a nogo. .................................................. ....................................fork brace,k&n pods,short bandle bars,oury grips,steel brake lines,new seat,1979 SF (clyde)

that sounded confusing to me I meant to say Orignally the light blewout and the plug behind it in the headlight was melted some.so I replaced the plug with new and reserve lighting unit,and fuses10 amp....just the jump was a definetly nogo! help please....gotta have light

Ok. I got a barn bike (found in a barn) Lots of wire problem
I restored a 1977 750 triple, I took out the reserve lighting unit.
I want to do the same with this bike is there a thred for this?

I feel like I fell asleep in class and missed something important. Why would any sane person want to remove the reserve lighting unit? Speaking as someone who has lost the gift of light at some bad times over the years this is something I would never do. or am I the only one here who rides in the dark?

Using the string rlu in the search button at the top of the page will bring up quite a few threads talking about the reserve lighting unit. For examplke, this one has a procedure to jumper around the RLU.

Hey Cyclerider,

I merged your several threads on this same topic/problem to help keep the suggestions and train of thought on the same line!!

Jumping the blue/red wires of the headlight RELAY just sends power directly to the RLU as soon as the bike is turned on without the required charging signal from the yellow wire activating the relay.

However, the RLU is the next link in the chain, and they also have been known to go bad. As per Ken Talbot's suggestion, bypassing it should finally get you the headlight. Perhaps it is shorting out internally, hence the spark on the battery neg. cable reattachment when you had the blue/red wires jumped??

It would be best to find and reply to this thread to continue troubleshooting vs. starting new threads!

Yes thankyou..i get impatient when my bikes down and I can't solve the issue immediately.again thanks for eveyones help.I get the dunce hat now.............................................79 xs/sf clyde.....fork brace/pods/stainless steel brake lines/new fuse box/4-1 kerker exhaust/new seat cover/short hadle bars/pc coil redone.last thing was gonna be mike xs coils and new wires/caps.....getting there. thanks guys.
