as long as you don't plug the two vent hoses and no bugs or debris get in, you shouldn't be too bad off - maybe some sort of air filter put on the ends of the tubes?

Update:
My order from Dennis Kirk has been lost by UPS. Luckily I ordered my rebuild kits from Cycle-Recycle. Although their web site does not say it, the kits are K&L. These kits are far more complete than rebuild kits I have seen other places; they included ALL o-rings and gaskets (aka squishy parts). They even included the washer and o-ring that go on the idle adjustment screw. I was very happy about this as I couldn't find a replacement for that o-ring anywhere. The kits come with both main jets and pilot jets. The pilots do not have a size stamped on them, but the mains had "110" stamped on the bottom. I have heard that these kits come with mains that are too big. Maybe K&L fixed that a little bit too well. I had plastic (yes plastic) 117.5's on my bike and I have an order in for brass 120's. I didn’t use either jet or the idle adjustment spring as it was a little shorter than mine.
With respect to the individual pod filters: I installed mine this weekend. I took it out for a test ride and lost the pod on #1 somewhere. Since the flange on my 81 carb is so short, I found that if I over-tighten the clamp on the pod it sort of squeezes the filter off. Not unlike squeezing a grape until it shoots out of your fingers. I now have oval indy filters on my outer two cylinders and round pods on the inner two. Cool look, but I will have to see if the mix is any different.
I was able to get my fast idle fixed through all of this. I richened up my idle mix and then slowed down the idle. This was done after balancing both the float levels and the butterflies.
More fun with the bike in a couple of weeks, I hope. Next weekend I am taking the love of my life to visit my folks for Easter. She drives a BMW R65. I like my women classy with warm toes *grin* I am looking forward to us taking the bikes out after I get the XS stable.

Ours are roughly 1/4 inch. Another option is to go to your local lawnmower dealer. I like the translucent type so I can see fuel flowing.
