  • Keep or sell?

Hey everybody. I know i've only had my xs11 for a short time now. But i went out looken at some new bikes with my friend jeremy. We went all over god's creation. Anyways, we went to a honda dealer harley, suzuki, etc. Well finally we stumble into a yamaha dealer. And i fall in love!!! I almost traded mine in on a new v star 1100. It was black with the v star logo on the tank chrome for days and felt awesome to set in. And when i fired it up i was practically sold.

However i wanted some opinions from you guys. Most of you have seen my bike (pretty nice bike from what i've been told) Well this winter i'm gonna clean it up and replace fork seals and brakes and change the oil and new tires. Well in the spring i think i'm gonna go down and get me a new bike and sell the xs. It's a fun bike and i love it but it's not my style. It'll never be a loud pipe vtwin (i know i'll get crucified for this post but i'm cool with that). Since i can't afford a brand new 1100 v star i'm getting one slightly used.

So should i wait and put some money into the old xs i.e. new tires brakes fork seals fluid change and sell it next spring or just ride it like it is and sell it how it sets next spring. Then go down and get my new v star and call it a day?
Yes it's a damn nice bike, yes it's in REALLY good condition, yes it would be a shame to chop it, BUT damn how cool would it look with ape hangers?

It's your bike, and your life, don't let any of us fanatical fellows tell you how to live it. If the XS isn't your cup of tea, pass it along to someone who digs on old, air cooled I - 4's. no harm no foul. I don't much care what someone rides, if your gonna ride it, you may as well like it. nutshell time....follow your heart, the rest will take care of itself. have a nice day and ride safe

        Dude,
Ride what you like. I have been infatuated with every bike I have owned. Even the little VTZ250 that was alway's trying to kill me.
If you think you will be able to get more money for fixing up your bike then selling it you should do it. You kinda have to look at it from the angle of a perspective buyer as well. when you know you are going to spend X number of dollars on a motorcycle and than need tires as well, you will offer a much lower number.
But on the other hand, a clean bike with lots of shine on it is deffinatly a good selling point.
        Good luck,
        Dan

By reading your previous posts I'm a little confused by what you want to do.I know that if i go into a dealer sure I'm tempted to look at the newest bikes. But then again why buy anything that everyone else has? At least with the XS or XJ whatever you have you don't see them everyday on the road.I get alot of looks and comments when i ride my XS more then when i ride my ZRX.I looked at a Z1000( i think) Kawasaki when i bought my ZRX- sure it was nice, but i began to see them alot after my visit to the dealership.I don't like having everything that everyone else has- but that's me.Best of luck no matter what you decide.

            Ok

Only thing i can say is that you better like the looks and sound a lot. Because if you like the power your gonna find a big difference
My 1500 C90 Suzuki has got a whooping 58 hp stock and weighs 800 lbs.Now you can change that with some mods but you will only get a 10 to 15 % increase. 1100cc v-twin is gonna have a lot less than your used to. You also feel every bump because you cant stand up on the pegs with foward controls. Just make sure you drive one before you jump too fast. I love my bike only because of the comfort on long rides but i might buy another inline 4 to play with when i can afford it. Hagd

my friend at work has a 98 or 02 vstar 1100, he has several mods done to it. he was the one who sold me his 82 xj11 and he said that the vstar was way slower than the xj even after the mods. he has tried a couple of times to get the xj back from me.
and every time i ride up to work on the 79 standard with the kerker he compliments me on the sound!

My step dad has a 1600? kawasaki something or other cruiser. Big windshield hard cases heel toe shift floor boards etc. I rode it around town a couple times and it was fun as hell! I don't necesarily look for the speed of it all when i ride. I'm more or less of a looks fan myself. If it looks cool and sounds cool i'll drive it. But yeah i'm just not wanting to put a bunch of money and time in a bike that's gonna require serious modifictions to get the look and sound i'm after. Because at the end of the day it's still gonna be more of a sport bike then a cruiser.

But yeah i want a little more reliability and comfort. But for the most part i just want something newer then what i have. Not to mention i like the new v stars. I rode my buddy's 1100 a while back and it had a custom built exhaust and a better breather. And it ran fast enough for me. And it cruised the hiway really nice. Very comfortable smooth acceleration not a lot of noise etc etc.

The problem i have with my bike is it feels like you sit on the bike rather then in the bike. My dads magna 750 is comfortable with the forward controls and drag bars. Cause your lower then the tank your not sitting behind it and even with it. So yeah i just want a little something different.
Yes it's a damn nice bike, yes it's in REALLY good condition, yes it would be a shame to chop it, BUT damn how cool would it look with ape hangers?

If you are not happy with the bike, then go for the newer one! I know how it is, as I keep looking at some of the newer bikes.
Don't worry about anyone here, and we WILL still ride with you, given the chance!
The GREAT thing about motorcycles is you can start with a "stock" anything, and fix it up, or down, to what YOU want! Enjoy!!

Arrrugghhhh!!!! Clear some junk outa the garage and make room for both of them!!!!!!

I to have been taunted by the new bike bug many times. At one time I had 8 bikes in the garage. As always, I sit down and reason with myself. The XS is still the lone gun in the garage. Why? Super cool bike, still draws a crowd, still generates a big grin when the throttle is twisted, easy to work on, cheap to insure, paid for.

Besides, my recent free allocation of a yard baby Honda three wheeler is gonna give me something to do. I guess you could call it a new bike, trike?

Get the Vstar if you don't mind a bike that is physically bigger and much slower even though the engine size is the same cc's. That is 50% of the reason why i dislike newer cruisers. They are just eye candy to me. It's just the way modern cruisers are built. They get bigger and heavier every year. The increase in engine size sounds great, but it is cancelled out by the increased weight. I'm a small guy so anything bigger than a 250 is going to look humongous when i'm on it ahhaha. You will definately wish you had the accelleration of the XS while you are on the vstar. I've been through 4 bikes so far before i found the XS1100. It's got everything i need/want in a motorcycle, good power, big gas tank, low maintenance, cheap :P, and no heavier than 500 pounds. Just figure out what you want in a motorcycle & it will help you figure out what type of bike you will be happy with

Or if you can-keep the XS and get the other.I have 2,my XS and a ZRX.You said the dealer would let you trade the XS, I'm just curious because i don't know of any dealer that would want a bike built 30 + years ago in trade for a current bike, but if he will and you can do it-go for it!

The Triumph dealer offered me 3000.00 for the XS when I ordered the Rocket III touring. The owner of the dealership was enthralled with the bike. Gave me his card and said if it comes up for sale I've got cash waiting. So there might be a market for them to the right person. In my case it was the owners first bike. Rocket III in 5 weeks.
