When I first bought the 79SF I yanked the bowls off the carbs to check the general shape of the beast. Cleaned up the little bit of the "green" gas residue with Gunk carb cleaner and took everything apart that I could from the bottom. Hosed out all the tubes and nooks and crannies. Also hosed the outside as well. Made them look better anyway.
Today I took the #4 carb apart and put the body into a small ultrasonic cleaner. It's big enough to put two carb bodies in at once. Dropped the smaller parts in as well.
Used a combination of Simple Green and Dawn diswashing soap and good old H20 and let it churn for about an hour.
Holy Crap! Could not believe the amount of stuff still in there. Couldn't hardly see the bottom of the tank. Just the condition of the Aluminum inside the carb is better. Bright and shiny!
I would have bet that carb was nearly clean inside before I started.
What a lesson. What looks clean isn't.
I won't bet now that it is as clean as it could be but I am a bit uncomfortable putting that aluminum body in cleaner that says to avoid "prolonged contact with aluminum".
I'm betting it is cleaner right now than it has been in the last 28 years!
If anyone has any doubts about the merit of using the ultasonic cleaner, my vote is a resouonding
"Do it!"
Again, thanks for the help I have recieved here in this forum.
Can't wait to get this bike up and moving.
