  • Ultrasonic Cleaning

When I first bought the 79SF I yanked the bowls off the carbs to check the general shape of the beast. Cleaned up the little bit of the "green" gas residue with Gunk carb cleaner and took everything apart that I could from the bottom. Hosed out all the tubes and nooks and crannies. Also hosed the outside as well. Made them look better anyway.

Today I took the #4 carb apart and put the body into a small ultrasonic cleaner. It's big enough to put two carb bodies in at once. Dropped the smaller parts in as well.

Used a combination of Simple Green and Dawn diswashing soap and good old H20 and let it churn for about an hour.

Holy Crap! Could not believe the amount of stuff still in there. Couldn't hardly see the bottom of the tank. Just the condition of the Aluminum inside the carb is better. Bright and shiny!

I would have bet that carb was nearly clean inside before I started.

What a lesson. What looks clean isn't.

I won't bet now that it is as clean as it could be but I am a bit uncomfortable putting that aluminum body in cleaner that says to avoid "prolonged contact with aluminum".

I'm betting it is cleaner right now than it has been in the last 28 years!

If anyone has any doubts about the merit of using the ultasonic cleaner, my vote is a resouonding

    "Do it!"

Again, thanks for the help I have recieved here in this forum.

Can't wait to get this bike up and moving.

A couple weeks ago they had one on sale at harbor freight for 75 bucks. Was big enough for 2 carbs at a time.

Wish I had the one at a robot plant I used to work at, you could load it up with tons of large circuit boards and put em in there.. the water jacket around the top that keeps the fumes in was run right off the main cooling lines in the plant .. then there was a small one in the hydraulic dept.. Man those were so awesome for carbs.. they had freon or contact cleaner in them that we got in 55 gal drums.

Prob was policing it so people didnt drop oily parts in there and then all heck breaks loose if it gets contaminated hehe..

Phil- The unit I am using is an older unit that came from a veternarian practice. Used for cleaning surgical instruments. I can't even hazard a guess at the cost. Anything that has to do with the medical field costs like it was made of platinum. Sorry.

Has anyone looked at some of the govenment surplus sites for surplus units?

Be careful that you don't leave them in to long. The Ultrasonic will turn them back and you may have to use paint remover on them to shine them back up some.

                    Bikerphil-
                    LATEX?
Oh, latex is just so 80's. I like a nice cotton blend. Much more comforable and keeps one from all that dreadful sweating while one is out on the town. Not sexy at all. The heat in some of those clubs can be so oppressive. LOL

Man, I guess I better change my handle before someone gets the wrong idea! Way off! Hope that latex monikier doesn't stick. Maybe somethng like late-xses. It's all good.

But you have '79 XS's. With 1100's, that would be earlyxeses. Or mabye your XS's have gone to the boneyard (late-xeses).

True-But an "as of late" owner as opposed to an "early owner".

Sent you a PM about the cleaner.
